Journal Otter's Journal: Yankees - Red Sox; Coach K 5

That was a terrific game last night. Bases loaded jams, Jeter's dive into the seats, Ortiz' dive into third, A-Rod yelling at the umpire demanding a triple play and then laughing and apologizing when he realized he'd gotten Manny twice, home runs, ground rule doubles, a 13th inning comeback win...

The Boston media are treating it as a catastrophe but unlike the two previous horror show games, this was one was really superbly played. (Except for some wretched outfielding by both teams. When Jeter went after that pop-up, you could see him thinking "No way I'm letting Sierra pull up on another one!") I hope it'll enter the ESPN Classic rotation. Sort of the antithesis of the Worst Baseball Game Ever, Cal Ripken's last game at Yankee Stadium, where they called it a 14 inning tie, essentially on the grounds of sucking too much.

Meanwhile, are the Lakers nuts? I know nothing about basketball, but even I realize that Mike Krzykewski (or whatever it is) is _the_ worst possible fit for an NBA coaching job. His niche is recriting good, nice, talented kids, coaching them to a championship and then watching them flop in the NBA. Who would think mixing that with Kobe Bryant is a good idea?

  • ...the best baseball game I have EVER watched.

I hung out with a friend watching the game till the 9th..

It was getting late so I went home, heard the almost triple play in the car and almost lost my shit, just as the announcers did till they realized that there was a double tag.

Got home kept watching, and called my friend after Jeter's leap. He answered the phone with exactly what I was going to say, "He's out of his fucking mind." Ya think Jeter was comitted to winning the game? ;)

    But god damn that wa
  • If Coach K goes to the NBA, it'll be terrible end to a great career. He's not a pro coach. He's a shining example of what a college coach should be, and what a college athletics program should be: academic AND athletic excellence. Such a rare thing today.....don't waste that legacy going to the National Buffoons Association, Coach.

Once it hits the fan, the only rational choice is to sweep it up, package it, and sell it as fertilizer.
