The service file is just a re-invention of JCL. That in itself might not have been a bad thing, but the way it was done stinks.

Very little thought was given to how such a program description file would be laid out and how the rest of the system would use it. Hence the mess.

The unreasonable costs are having to learn a whole new set of admin commands that could previously have been done with a line of Bash. When things go wrong I haven't got time for any of that nonsense. systemctl? journalctl? networkctl? The list goes on.
