I'm a Slackware diehard: it's been my primary distro since 1995. Will 12.0 have an official AMD64 port? It's high time there was one. I know there have been unofficial ones such as Bluewhite, Slamd64 and the other one, but I think lack of an official build is a major problem.
I had great plans to do my own one, but I haven't had the time. Last year I was messing about with Splack on an old Sun Ultra 1.
It has always puzzled me how there's an official Slackware S390 port but no AMD64...
AFAIK -- I am not a big AMD64 user -- Slamd64 has always been the best solution. But, hey, I may be wrong. Fred Emmott does a great job tracking the changes that are brought to Slackware (his website indicates slamd64 is now up to 12.0RC1, for instance). Also AFAIK, Patrick V. has stated repeatedly that "normal/vanilla" Slackware runs very well on AMD64, with few changes, and that the performance boost that would come from re-compiling everything for 64 bits CPU is not worth the time. Not to mention it would

Indeed it runs perfectly since AMD64 processors are perfectly backwards-compatible with x86-32 processors.
As for the "performance boost" his statement is a bit simplistic, but he's a busy man and needs to concentrate his efforts on pleasing as many customers as he can (every
The first time, it's a KLUDGE! The second, a trick.
Later, it's a well-established technique!
