Microsoft Not the Only Firm Blocking IM Service To US Enemies 173

ericatcw writes "It was reported last week that Microsoft had cut access to its Windows Live Messenger instant messaging service to citizens of five countries with whom the US has trade embargoes. Now, it turns out that Google and, apparently, AOL have taken similar actions. According to a lawyer quoted by Computerworld, even free, downloaded apps are viewed as 'exports' by the US government — meaning totally in-the-cloud services such as e-mail may escape the rules. Either way, there appear to be a number of ways determined citizens of Syria, Iran, and Cuba can get around the ban."

While we can be quick to claim hot topics as 'DRM' or 'Poor Economy' for the cause, it's more likely the simple fact that the difference between BluRay and DVD is negligible. DVD from VHS brought 5.1 surround sound and full digital picture. There was also the elimination of over-use causing damage to your tapes and of course the dreaded RE-WIND. BluRay brings nothing spectacular or revolutionary to the table aside from slightly higher resolution for an excessively higher price. Consumers don't need/want it. Myself included.

Ok so lots of valuable company data is moved from your facility to a bank by an employee on a weekly basis? I think the weakest link in the chain is you. I'm just saying what's to stop someone from taking the tapes from you in transit? Sure the bank has good security (cameras, security guards, a vault), and your company most likely has good security too but when your in transit couldn't someone stop you and take the tapes from you (by force if needed)? Just out of curiosity are there any backup software packages (like something made by Veritas or Computer Associates) that will not only compress data before backup but also encrypt it?
