Mortimer.CA writes: Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft has submitted their HD Photo to the JPEG committee: 'Microsoft's ongoing attempt to establish its own photo format as a JPEG alternative (and potential successor) took another step forward today when the JPEG standards group agreed to consider HD Photo (originally named Windows Media Photo) as a standard. If successful, the new file standard will be known as JPEG XR.' Microsoft has made a 'commitment to make its patents that are required to implement the specification available without charge.' While JPEG 2000 exists, HD Photo has several advantages (not the least of which is a lot less CPU power is needed). Is this a big of an issue as ODF/OOXML?

dustman81 writes: The ACLU is objecting to the Springdale, Ohio police department using an automated license plate scanner on their patrol cars to locate stolen vehicles or those who's owners are wanted on felony warrants. The scanner can read 900 license plates an hour traveling at highway speeds.
So far, the scanner has located 95 stolen cars and helped locate 111 wanted felons. The locations of the license plates scanned are tagged with GPS data so when the data is downloaded, it can cross-referenced on a map. If the plate is wanted, the times and locations of where it was scanned can be referenced.

These days, you better bring your A-game when promoting a product in an already (somewhat) saturated market, and Dell has certainly given it its best shot with a recent Latitude XT promo. The video showcases a gentlemen who is apparently fed up with his other tablet and the incomprehensible grief it has caused him, and rather than selling it to another poor sap and waiting it out for Dell's forthcoming alternative, he takes matters into his own hands. Needless to say, the poor machine didn't stand a chance against a mighty electrical saw, and while we highly doubt the impending Latitude tablet could either, it's a comical watch nonetheless. I think that webmasters generally force Internet Explorer (Corporation Webmasters) for a few reasons:
1) IE, admittedly, still has the larger User Base
2) They were taught in school (instead of self-taught) and know what school taught; MICROSOFT
3) Active-X and WMV.
Unfortunately, until Microsoft uses only Standards-Compliant rendering, things like this will continue. Personally, I think Active-X should be Open-Source (and available for Opera and FF) and that IE should render Standards-Compliant (and nothing else) just so that webmasters would either have to learn standards, or the company would not make any money at all.
