Submission + - Microsoft's HD Photo to become JPEG Standard?

Mortimer.CA writes: Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft has submitted their HD Photo to the JPEG committee: 'Microsoft's ongoing attempt to establish its own photo format as a JPEG alternative (and potential successor) took another step forward today when the JPEG standards group agreed to consider HD Photo (originally named Windows Media Photo) as a standard. If successful, the new file standard will be known as JPEG XR.' Microsoft has made a 'commitment to make its patents that are required to implement the specification available without charge.' While JPEG 2000 exists, HD Photo has several advantages (not the least of which is a lot less CPU power is needed). Is this a big of an issue as ODF/OOXML?

Submission + - Elton John: 'Close Down the Internet!' (zeropaid.com)

Jared writes: "Says that it's "destroying good music" and "stopped people from going out and being with each other, creating stuff." Laments the way that the internet and the emerging industry of digital music has created a cold and impersonal world for artists to create new music in. He says that it is "destroying good music, and that "The internet has stopped people from going out and being with each other, creating stuff." http://www.zeropaid.com/news/8947/Elton+John%3A+'C lose+Down+the+Internet!'"

Submission + - Smart Teens Don't Have Sex...hmm Now I know :) (gnxp.com)

Tech.Luver writes: "Gene Expression reports, " Tyler Cowen quotes from a new study testing the relationship between grades and delayed sexual activity. Last December I passed a paper along to Razib showing that high-school age adolescents with higher IQs and extremely low IQs were less likely to have had first intercourse than those with average to below average intelligence. (i.e. for males with IQs under 70, 63.3% were still virgins, for those with IQs between 70-90 only 50.2% were virgin, 58.6% were virgins with IQs between 90-110, and 70.3% with IQs over 110 were virgins) In fact, a more detailed study from 2000 is devoted strictly to this topic, and finds the same thing: Smart Teens Don't Have Sex (or Kiss Much Either). Journal SPAM: Who Are the Pirates

Live 365 claims that up to 56% of its musical broadcasts are Indie. This compares with regular AM and FM radio where only 10-13% is Indie and so it would seem that Live 365 plays up to 4 times as much Indie.
My source for this is;[spam URL stripped]
Now, back in April, Sound Exchange and RIAA obtained legal authority to collect royalties for any digital performance and distribute the money to Indie Artists and Indie labels, sort of li

Submission + - ACLU objects to police scanning license plates (ap.org) 1

dustman81 writes: The ACLU is objecting to the Springdale, Ohio police department using an automated license plate scanner on their patrol cars to locate stolen vehicles or those who's owners are wanted on felony warrants. The scanner can read 900 license plates an hour traveling at highway speeds. So far, the scanner has located 95 stolen cars and helped locate 111 wanted felons. The locations of the license plates scanned are tagged with GPS data so when the data is downloaded, it can cross-referenced on a map. If the plate is wanted, the times and locations of where it was scanned can be referenced. This system is also in use in British Columbia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENGY1CD9y_4

Submission + - Does ODF have a future?

qedramania writes: "Linuxworld seems to think ODF is a dead duck. Is the windows monopoly too big and too entrenched? Other than die hard linux fans, does anyone really care is they have to keep paying microsoft to do basic office work? It seems with news of China and the borg doing deals, and ODF getting rolled in the US, the momentum is towards a microsoft monoculture in business and government. You can bet that big business and governments will want (and get) more than just reliability from microsoft in return for their aquiescence."

Comment Re:Slashdot Webmasters Forcing IE? (Score 1) 899

I think that webmasters generally force Internet Explorer (Corporation Webmasters) for a few reasons: 1) IE, admittedly, still has the larger User Base 2) They were taught in school (instead of self-taught) and know what school taught; MICROSOFT 3) Active-X and WMV. Unfortunately, until Microsoft uses only Standards-Compliant rendering, things like this will continue. Personally, I think Active-X should be Open-Source (and available for Opera and FF) and that IE should render Standards-Compliant (and nothing else) just so that webmasters would either have to learn standards, or the company would not make any money at all.
