Feed Engadget: How to stop your PC going up in smoke (engadget.com)

Finding out the hard way how combustible PCs are is a painful experience, especially when it's your extremely overclocked -- and extremely expensive -- gaming PC. Gearlog has a slightly bitter how to for avoiding the mistake of one of their unfortunate writers. We'd add our own personal little tip for preventing a PC fire: don't tempt fate and get a PC with a flamin' custom paint job.

Submission + - Sprite and Oportunity are back on line

__aaocyu4248 writes: According to NASA the rovers have survived the dust storms that have swept the surface of Mars for the last 6 weeks.

How well they survived remains to be seen as the sun is not at full strength due to dust that is still suspended in the atmosphere so the rovers currently only have about half the power they normally would.

The article is here, a little sparse on the exact health of the rovers but its good to know they are still with us.

Submission + - Effective use of technology in the classroom 1

postermmxvicom writes: "I remember in college I had one professor who, in addition to being a great teacher, really took advantage of the technology in the classroom to illustrate the concepts for Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Well, now I am the teacher. I teach Algebra, AP Calculus, and Physics at high school. This year, I have gotten a tablet and a wireless projector. I now can write on my tablet instead of the board and use other applications. I want to effectively utilize this tech for teaching. Please share how you have seen technology effectively used for Math and Physics. Specific software or how that software was used (specific or general).

I want to serve my students well. I thought it'd be nice to hear fellow nerds reminisce about their favorite teachers."

Journal Journal: An Open Source Vista Service Pack 2

I write a blog on Education and I had wanted to leverage the purchase of a low-cost PC with a brief tutorial on installing Ubuntu as an inexpensive alternative for educational institutions. I am trying to convince local [and national educators] to purchase low-cost PCs for students in high school so that they can search information, blog, and participate in the world as we all do these days (An entirely different conversation).

Submission + - Why Are So Many Nerds Libertarians? 9

BrendanMcGrail writes: Why do so many nerds seem to lean toward the Libertarian end of the spectrum? As a leftist, I know there are many people who share my ideological views, but have very little in common with me in terms of profession and non-work interests? Is the community's political bent directly tied to our higher than average economic success?

Journal Journal: Adobe Acrobat is Spyware (not a surprise) 2

I'm posting this because I don't know what else to do with it. I've found some obvious spyware behavior with recent Acrobat Reader updates (actually, they probably go back at least to V7), but can't find anything on them via Google. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed this, so it must be a plot.

1. Why Anonymous Mods suck

Any user on Slashdot is invited to moderate after a while, so long as their Karma remains positive. Moderation is great when its used wisely and I've no hassle being modded down when deserved. Trouble is, every man and their dog is doing it now, and there is no accountability. Take this post. Someone modded it as a "Troll" shortly after I posted it, and hardly anyone else got to see it:
