Comment Diminishing returns - Spend where the crime is (Score 1) 36

Collectively as a country we are spending billions on a mass surveillance system that is focused on a limited type of crime. In the mean time our communication networks and marketplaces are being used for all kinds of crime that is nearly risk free for the criminals. The push should be to move the federal government away from these lazy forms of crime control to the hard work of going after scammers, cyber attackers, blackmailers and entitlement fraudsters. The feds are doing what is easy, sending money to businesses, and avoiding what is hard, really protecting American citizens. This should be a 2026 campaign issue.

The collective cost we are spending on Flock & surveillance technology seems like it is past the point of diminishing returns. We really don't need to immediately observe every car thief stealing every car. While we are building up this surveillance infrastructure, scammers are ruining cell phone networks, e-mail and personal advertising sites and they do with it with little risk of capture or punishment. If it is a a government's job to protect citizens from crime and abuse our government is failing. Every Federal politician should be forced to address "scammer crime" in a serious way while running for office. Surveillance systems are attractive to governments because they are relatively cheap and easy. A good government goes where the crime actually is.

The US spends all kinds of money on law enforcement. If one illegally parks for an hour it is highly likely one will get a ticket. But somehow there can be whole industries that can tie up our communication networks and rob resources from citizens with no risk of punishment. We have the FBI, CIA, IRS, DoD, NSA, State Department and congress all doing nothing about this problem because it is "hard" to solve. We need cyber warfare against these criminals, tariffs against violating countries, and full criminal accountability to go after these criminals. This can be solved, we just have the wrong government focus.

I don't understand the obsession with Israel. Israel is something like 0.3% of the land area of the Mideast and 2% of the population (not even all Jewish). If any country claims that Israel is some sort of road block to success it is just excuse making to cover for real bad leadership. At worst they are analogous to a wasp nest, just leave them the hell alone and build your damn societies per your interests.
