While the Germans do like their cash, it is false to assuem, that this is the reason for so many blowups:
One has to understand the culture of Banks and Insurance Companies in Germany:
And just to explain my background:
I am German, and I work for a large German bank, so have a little bit of an understanding:
The reason for those blowups are simple:
Even though cash is still very popular, Most German Banks and Insurance Companies are probably some of the greediest in the world.
Very few ATMs are actually equipped with paint packs, gas alarms or fog systems.
even worse, you go to an ATM that is not from your own bank, you ca nget charged up to €10,- for a withdrawel (I am talking about debit cards not credit cards).
The ATMS are relatively easy to get access to and typically filled with butane or propane gas, sealed with tape and then ignited. often the explosion causes damage close to building collpse.
The gangs are rarely from Germany, They come with high powered cars, grap as much cash as possible, ideally an intact casette jump in the car and race across a nearby boarder.
Typically they are three:
1. driver (often very well trained for highspeed)
2. lookout, making sure they are in the clear and keeping an eye on surroundings. this one ususally also knows the escape route and alternative route
3. the actor: this one usually goes in by himself occasionally with a trainee.
Those gpeople are well organised and even have training facilities to test/check.
the big explosions that cause so much damage are usually executed by trainees.
But again. This is not becasue the Germans like their cash, but becasue most banks are so cheap, they rarely have protective measures in place.
Only recently (end 2023) some banks have started protecting against blasting. And there are tow reasons for that:
- Insurance premiums are going through the roof
- because often buildings that conatin apartments and living space are affected, public oppinioin is getting the better of them
Apart from that, there have been calls for the banks to cover expenses for repair and even rebuilding if need be, if the ATM didn't have adequate protection.
So please, get the facts straight. has nothing to do with cash-prefference being the main cause....
Just the stupidety of the beancounters within the banks....
