that's fine East of the Rockies on the plains- but what about out here in Mountain Land? We not only had bigger forests than the east- but also some pretty impressive natural boundaries, like rivers a couple of miles wide running through 200' deep gorges.

Well, there are a few anomalies. But Texas was once it's own country, and Hawaii is surrounded by ocean. A better comparison would be Texas-Alaska.....

2nd reply- Hawaii fits too now that I think of it, didn't even become a state until airline travel made it reachable!

Although you have a good argument with Texas and Alaska- two points do make a line. And with any state before Texas, you got three points.
Just hope Puerto Rico never gets statehood.

Yeah. But the point with Hawaii is that air travel turned a 3-to-6 month journey into a 12-24 hour journey. That, and there just isn't that much land there to begin with.
