Journal Marxist Hacker 42's Journal: Coding Standards in Slashdot? 4

Does slashdot have any coding standards for advertisers at all? I finally figured out why things are sometimes centered, or why the CSS gets messed up- it's the banner advert on the top of the screen at work when I'm limited to IE. Never happens at home on Firefox because I've got advert blocking software installed there.

How stupid do you have to be to piss off potential customers by messing up the code in your banner adverts?

  • Certainly.. I was always wondering why the same shivering big bowl has been seen at the top banner advertisement when things are centered.
  • Go into your user control area and adjust your slashdot preferences to the low-res version. All the content, no cruft, pages load faster. • Dude, I was totally wondering what the hell was broken.

To this point, I use Safari and Firefox at home without an ad blocker, and I never have this problem. Very likely the editors of slashdot are unaware of this effect upon the IE browsers, and if they are they are choosing to ignore it.

But I very often get some stupid misrendering of my page on IE, it's nice to know it's from the adverts + IE.
  • But the third party ad servers that feed the slashdot pages don't always respond very quickly, and until they do, the page doesn't load. So, finally I had to block them out. It didn't matter which browser I used.
an.tacoda.net/ and a.as-us.falkag.net/ are the big offenders here. I check occasionally to see if they correct the problem. When they do, I'll unblock them. Unless they use Flash...
