Journal M.C. Hampster's Journal: Post of the Day 9

Post of the day can be found here. Here is an exerpt:

"File sharing is not wrong, but even if it is wrong, it's still helping bands more than it's hurting, and even when it does hurt them, the labels have no right to sue the services, just the specific offenders, but even if they do catch a file-sharer, they have no right to sue them unless the offender just happens to volunteer his name and address."

Note: the poster is making fun of this logic, not advocating it :-)

It sounds like (pick a candidate) from the Democrat "debate" last week!
  • the difficulty as this post points out is that the RIAA is using the DMCA to obtain customer data without a court order. [slashdot.org]

What this means is that there is no accountability, since the RIAA doesn't have to get a judge to agree with them. SBC must give up the customer data the RIAA requests, whether or not the RIAA presents sufficient evidence that a customer is in violation.

Would you want YOUR ISPs customer file on you to just be given to the RIAA with no accountability at all? Especially if you did nothin

    • Actually, I agree with you. I think the procedures setup by the DMCA for a copyright holder to force ISP's to hand out customer information is unconstitional. I don't think there is any due process involved. However, I still think the post was insightful because it shows the constant raising of the bar and changing of standards that seem to happen in the majority of posts on Slashdot.

      • Ah, yes, the /. groupthink.

It shows one of my greatest pet peeves -- the lack of ability of most people to think for themselves.

Dammit, people, don't let Slashdot or CNN or Fox News or the President of the United States or the ministry of your church (or circle, grove, coven, synagogue, temple, etc.) or ANYBODY tell YOU what to think. USE YOUR BRAIN. That's why it was given to you.

  • Collectively, Slashdot is the biggest group of self important pansies on the internet. When the world doesn't see things our way, we have a nasty habit of crying and threatening to take our ball and go home.

I don't know if there's a bigger group of spoiled children in need of a spanking in the world...
