Comment What's the problem? (Score 5, Insightful) 118

The negatives cited in the summary all sound either very hypothetical or niche cases. For the majority, if you are able to complete the work you're assigned, what does it matter where you are? Sounds like just another case of those wanting to micromanage their direct reports and justify their own job.

Definitely bad reporting. They remark about it being a "a turbulent week for Boeing, with the US plane maker suffering a series of safety-related issues," but then go on to list:
  • 1. The engine ingesting plastic wrap on the airfield (not even remotely Boeing's fault)
  • 2. Fumes in the cabin (haven't heard this one, so can't comment)
  • 3. A tire falling off (maintenance issue)
  • 4. Rolling off the runway (pilot error from taking the corner too fast in a rush to line up for takeoff)

Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that most people would choose to race. Without even seeing the graph, let alone one supplemented with additional relevant data, just based on the text description here of the general shape, it already sounded obvious that lower temperatures meant higher rates of failure.

THANK YOU! I was scrolling down through the comments, and you're the first person who actually gets it. It's not that she said bad things about Jews, but how she exploited their very real history of persecution to feed her own baseless persecution complex. She has every right to say those things, but freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from accountability, and I wouldn't for a second blame Disney for not wanting to be associated with such messaging.

Reading these comments, clearly I'm in the minority, but I actually prefer Backspace=Back. I virtually never have an issue with this, as it seems any decent website knows not to go back if you're typing in a textbox. Hopefully someone releases a small add-on to reinstate this feature as they did when Chrome pulled this same move a while back.

Is Microsoft Trying To Make Windows 10 Mail Worse? (venturebeat.com) 232

Emil Protalinski via VentureBeat argues that "Windows Mail is unusable, and instead of improving it, Microsoft is looking to drive users away": Microsoft started forcing Mail to use Edge for email links in Windows 10 build 17623 last month. This week, the company started including Office 365 ads right at the bottom of the app. But even these poor decisions are just extra nails in the coffin. Windows Mail has difficulty sending and receiving email. No, I'm not exaggerating for effect. If you have an email open and Windows Mail detects that a new email has hit your inbox, you'll get a notification. Standard stuff. If, however, you then click on said notification, Windows Mail will take you to the open email message, rather than the one that you just clicked on. That's half of the time. The other half of the time this happens, Windows Mail will crash altogether. Apparently having one email open and trying to open another one that just came in is overwhelming for Windows Mail. But that's not the end of it.

Windows Mail is also notorious for not sending emails. Multiple times a week, I open an email, hit reply, type out a quick message, hit send, and alt-tab back to Chrome or Word. Any normal email client will send the message despite the app not being the active window. With Windows Mail, countless times I have wondered why I never got heard back to a specific reply, only to discover hours later, and completely by accident, that the message is still a draft. It's not even sitting in my outbox -- it's just a fucking draft. I end up debating whether to send the email hours late, or if it doesn't make sense to send it anymore. That's not a decision I should have to make. There are of course small features I would like to see added to Windows Mail, like being able to set formatted signatures (as opposed to just plain text), but that's hardly a priority. Windows Mail is unusable, which means Windows 10 doesn't come with an email client. That's incredibly sad.

Microsoft Admits It Updated Some Windows 10 Computers To Newest Build Despite Users Telling It Not To Do That (bleepingcomputer.com) 137

Catalin Cimpanu, writing for BleepingComputer: The admission came in a knowledge base article updated last week. Not all users of older Windows versions were forcibly updated, but only those whose machines were running Windows 10 v1703 (Creators Update). This is the version where Microsoft added special controls to the Windows Update setting section that allow users to pause OS updates in case they have driver or other hardware issues with the latest OS version. But according to reports, a Microsoft snafu ignored these settings and forcibly updated some users to Windows 10 v1709 (Fall Creators Update).

Windows 10 Compatibility Issues Forcing US Air Force To Scrap a Significant Number of Computers (betanews.com) 151

The US Department of Defense has decreed that the Air Force must complete its migration to Windows 10 by March 31 2018. From a report: Failure to do so will result in any systems not running Microsoft's latest operating system being denied access to the Air Force Network. However, because Windows 10 is not compatible with many of the Air Force's existing systems, a significant number of computers will need to be replaced in order to hit the deadline.

Comment Non-Story (Score 1) 119

The title makes it sound like a widespread problem, but it looks like this has only happened to a single person. Honestly, seems like some idiot user accidentally turned on a notification feature and then was upset when it did what he told it to do. Just because he wasn't aware of what he did or how he could easily stop it doesn't really make it a scandal.
