Simulation of Close Asteroid Fly-By 148

c0mpliant writes "NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have released a simulation of the path of an asteroid, named Apophis, that will come very close to Earth in 2029 — the closest predicted approach since humans have monitored for such heavenly bodies. The asteroid caused a bit of a scare when astronomers first announced that it would enter Earth's neighborhood some time in the future. However, since that announcement in 2004, more recent calculations have put the odds of collision at 1 in 250,000."

Hand Written Clock 86

a3buster writes "This clock does not actually have a man inside, but a flatscreen that plays a 24-hour loop of this video by the artist watching his own clock somewhere and painstakingly erasing and re-writing each minute. This video was taken at Design Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009."

Of course each oft the systems have to have their own passwd file, wtf.. unless you're authenticating to ldap or another service.

The solution is to have the folder you are mounting to in fstab, and tell it to always mount media as a specific UID/Group

Also, the "display or execute" message isn't a problem with the OS, it's a file manager issue. I'm guessing if it annoys you that much, then somebody would have by now submitted it as a bug/idea, and the project admins could decide whether to make it not display that message & just do what's right, or to put an option in somewhere to disable the message. It shouldn't have to ask since it can look up the file extension and then pass it through the binary wrappers

Your arrogant post suggests that banning trips to Japan during the SARS outbreak would have been as effective as banning trips to the US. Get your geography straight. American flu? with the negative stigma mexicans already carry across North America (sorry to be politically incorrect and admit it), Mexican flu wouldn't fly- maybe central american flu if it weren't so long (CAF?) but calling it the American flu won't fly.

For the record, I'm not American

Idea Stock Exchange 160

Retrospeak writes to tell us The New York Times has an interesting article on an interesting business strategy used by a company called Rite-Solutions. The system recognizes the need for harvesting ideas from the entire company instead of just one or two "idea-men" in a stock-market-esque idea exchange. From the article: "We're the founders, but we're far from the smartest people here," Mr. Lavoie, the chief executive, said during an interview at Rite-Solutions' headquarters outside Newport, R.I. "At most companies, especially technology companies, the most brilliant insights tend to come from people other than senior management. So we created a marketplace to harvest collective genius."

Vista May Put Anti-Spyware Companies Out 392

Ant wrote to mention a C|Net article with an interesting premise: Windows Vista's tough approach to spyware may put anti-spyware companies out of business. From the article: "While this may be good news for buyers of Vista, it is not for anyone who makes a living from selling anti-spyware software. The worldwide market has boomed recently, reaching $97 million in revenue in 2004, up 240.4 percent from a year earlier, according to IDC. However, companies such as Webroot Software and Sunbelt Software are in for tough times, analysts said."
