Submission + - Phone call whitelist?

javacowboy writes: I've been getting lots of strange phone calls lately. Most of the time, my phone would ring less than three times and then stop before I can answer. Then, a couple of nights ago, I got a call at 3am in the morning. It had stopped ringing by the time I woke up. *69 revealed a number with an area code of 632, which does not exist. I called the number, and the call would not complete past the area code.

I'm getting fed up with:
  • Wrong numbers
  • Wrong numbers that hang up on me as soon as I speak into the phone
  • Telemarketers
  • Crank calls
  • Weird calls than hang up before I answer
  • Late night calls
  • People I know that I no longer wish to speak to
  • etc
My telco charges $8 a month for call display, which is exorbitant. Still, call display won't prevent my phone from ringing. A do not call list will not prevent my phone from ringing. Getting my phone number removed from the phone directory will not prevent wrong numbers.

I want a product or service with which I can set up a whitelist of numbers that I allow to make my phone ring. Any number not on the list, or an unlisted phone number, tries to call me, and the phone doesn't ring at all.

I would pay as much for this service as I would pay to have my number removed from the phone directory.

Is there any legal way for me to do this?

Gaming Portal Announced By Wizards of the Coast 53

1up has coverage of a strange development: a gaming portal focused on tabletop and strategy games. The site is slated to be a editorial/community site focusing on Avalon Hill and Wizards products, as well as potentially offering a venue for independent PC games. "Wizards of the Coast is eager to stress that Gleemax is not about pimping their own products, so much as it is about strengthening the overall culture of gaming as a whole. It's a husbandry approach; by creating a fertile ground where the various tribes of gaming can meet and greet, they hope to build interest (and presumably sales) through the basic principle of cultivating a strong player community." The whole thing is something of an odd move for the company, and for some insight into the launch Greg Kostikiyan at the Games*Design*Art*Culture blog clarifies the reality of Gleemax as an indie game publisher. You'd think he would look at the site as competition for his own Manifesto Games, but he seems fairly philosophical about it.

What the hell is the script for this going to look like?

Forget the script, what is the soundtrack going to sound like? I'd say they'd get some famous artists or even some older artists looking for a comeback to re-record their songs in Silmish and then sell the album as a double disc: English version and Simlish version. Or if they go cheaper they'd just get some unknowns desperate for a deal to torture their lead singers by making them learn Simlish.

Having said that, I'd nominate "The Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground simply because I'm curious as to what "just grab 'em in the biscuts" and "you look like MC Hammer on crack" sound like in Simlish.
