Satya Nadella At Six Months: Grading Microsoft's New CEO 151

snydeq writes The future emerging for Microsoft under Nadella is a mixed bag of hope and turmoil, writes Woody Leonhard in his review of Nadella's first fix months at the helm of Microsoft. "When Nadella took over, Microsoft was mired in the aftermath of a lengthy and ultimately unpopular reign by longtime CEO — and Microsoft majority shareholder — Steve Ballmer. Given the constraint of that checkered past, some might argue that Nadella hasn't had enough time to make his imprint on every aspect of Microsoft. Yet there have been many changes already under Nadella's watch, and patterns are certainly emerging as to the kind of company Microsoft will be in the years ahead." Leadership, product lines, financials — Nadella's scorecard shows strong strategic leadership, particularly around the cloud, but Windows and devices are murky at best, with Microsoft employees "taking it in the shorts, and not only in Finland."

Stolen Laptop Owner Outwits Mugger, Police, and the Media 272

An anonymous reader writes "What do you get mugged in Central London and the local police are too incompetent to find a mugger even with his address and photograph? You may not be able to get to the laptop, but you still own the photos and data on it, so you set up the NSFW Plumpergeddon blog which gives details of the subsequent 'owner's' 'Brick House Butts' fetishes. Now of course later the IT media might get interested and offer an interview with a promise to let him review the article and keep his name secret. luckily our hero is not so innocent and demonstrates the value of using a false name on the internet as well as planting your own monitoring software on your laptop."

Shouldn't you consider the fact that monitoring volcanoes can save quite a lot of money.

A billion dollars saved by evacuating people and materials from affected areas due to the early warning from monitoring systems is just as valuable as billion dollars created by building and selling cars.

Of course, the amount of money saved can be small and there can be much more efficient ways of stimulating the economy, but saying that the money is completely wasted is just utterly wrong.

"The handles pop out as you are within a meter of your door"

This doesn't mean that the door locks itself immediately when you close it - just that you can open the doors without fumbling with keys and whatnot. When you exit the 1-meter radius the car locks the doors automatically. This system has been in use in high-end cars for years (called keyless entry) and works quite well.

"Then the car starts while you are sitting"

Remember that this car is electric. This "starting" means the same as in a normal car to turn the key for two notches (i.e. you have radio, air conditioning etc.) - the engine does not start up until needed. Electric engines are perfectly happy sitting at 0 rpm until power is required - and can spin up from there immediately.

My Nokia 6500 classic has only a micro USB connection, which is used for charging, PC connection and handsfree/headphones. Charging the phone is possible using the data cable, and this will also work on any PC without installing drivers. The phone shows up like a memory stick when connected to a PC without the drivers.

Facebook's New Terms of Service 426

An anonymous reader writes "Chris Walters writes about Facebook's new terms of service. 'Facebook's terms of service (TOS) used to say that when you closed an account on their network, any rights they claimed to the original content you uploaded would expire. Not anymore. Now, anything you upload to Facebook can be used by Facebook in any way they deem fit, forever, no matter what you do later. Want to close your account? Good for you, but Facebook still has the right to do whatever it wants with your old content. They can even sublicense it if they want.'" Oh no! Fallout games have always had a 20-level cap. This is the 3rd fallout game in the series. You'd expect its game mechanics to follow the other two, even if it is in 3d and not 2d isometric.

Wrong! None of the older Fallout games had a level cap. In Fallout the last new perks came available at level 18 and in Fallout 2 & Tactics last perks were at level 24. Of course you would run out of meaningful quests at around this time, but there was nothing stopping you from gaining experience or levels in random encounters or by slaughtering the whole ingame populace.

Bay Area To Install Electric Vehicle Grid 388

Mike writes "Recently San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland unveiled a massive concerted effort to become the electric vehicle capitol of the United States. The Bay Area will be partnering with Better Place to create an essential electric vehicle infrastructure, marking a huge step towards the acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable alternative to those that run on fossil fuels." Inhabitat.com has some conceptual illustrations and a map showing EV infrastructure, such as battery exchange stations, stretching from Sacramento to San Diego — though this is far more extensive than the Bay Area program actually announced, which alone is estimated to cost $1 billion.
