Many people have to change jobs multiple times over their career. Like the original poster I managed to keep up and adapt with tech over the last 3+ decades. If I couldn't well I would have to look for something else. Roofer not so much but in high school and college I did landscaping and lawn service. I'd fall back to that in a heart beat if I had to. The barrier to entry is pretty low.

My ancestors came here and literally formed their own language, Pennsylvania German. When the British took Pennsylvania back from the Penns my ancestors swore an oath to God and King in their native tongue. Likewise when many of them revolted and kicked the British out they once again swore an oath in German to become US citizens. English has never been a requirement and shouldn't be now.

I am not familiar with how UK cities and government function and have little gumption to acquire it. One thing which strikes me as odd is here in America conservatives have very little say in governing our large cities. If a city here reduced its police force it would not be the fault of conservatives. I suspect they are trying to blame them for liberal policing policies.

You think people are stupid? Anyone with half a brain sees through that and it just pisses them off more. You should be trying to win them over. And besides, if it is truly the better option you should not need to force anything. Just let it win. This mindset is self defeating.

Honestly, I think it will happen faster without mandates. By forcing it on people you've now suddenly convinced a very vocal minority not to do it. Leave it up to free choice and you won't have as much push back.

I actually love the whole Elon thing since now on one side you have a whole bunch of folks conditioned to hate EVs but the guy who finally made them into something more than a golf cart and desirable is your boy's bro. Sounds good in theory but to make up for the amount of revenue generated by the gas tax you would have to tack on at least $1000 to a set of tires. That is going to create a huge incentive to drive around on worn tires. Yes, I understand safety inspections, I live in PA, but there are many ways around that. The unintended consequences of this will get people killed. And not just the offenders obviously. With the proliferation of plate readers I think the best option is to just toll more roads. The DMV knows whether it is a light car or heavy truck.
