Honestly, I think it will happen faster without mandates. By forcing it on people you've now suddenly convinced a very vocal minority not to do it. Leave it up to free choice and you won't have as much push back.

I actually love the whole Elon thing since now on one side you have a whole bunch of folks conditioned to hate EVs but the guy who finally made them into something more than a golf cart and desirable is your boy's bro. On the flip side those who think EVs are the savior of the human race can no longer worship the guy who made them actually viable. Enjoying watching both sides deal with it.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here waiting for someone to produce one which has the range to get me to the beach and back and it'll get added to my fleet.

Sounds good in theory but to make up for the amount of revenue generated by the gas tax you would have to tack on at least $1000 to a set of tires. That is going to create a huge incentive to drive around on worn tires. Yes, I understand safety inspections, I live in PA, but there are many ways around that. The unintended consequences of this will get people killed. And not just the offenders obviously. With the proliferation of plate readers I think the best option is to just toll more roads. The DMV knows whether it is a light car or heavy truck.

While I totally agree with you this was a cash cow for the 24 hour news media and provided a blue print for ratcheting up anxiety and ratings I often wonder what it would have looked like had we not spent years preparing. I doubt it would have looked anything like what the media was touting but I also think there would have been some significant issues. Civilization ending? No. I know I found a couple minor bugs in the systems I maintained and fixed them long before the millennium rolled around.

All of the damage done as a result of Covid.... The old people who died alone, the children who missed a couple year of experience, the years of inflation from covid stimulus, I could go on... It is important we determine what caused it and what could have been done better to respond to it. Others will, but I am not looking to assign blame but to do better next time.

I rant the IT department at a small newspaper. I was onsite at the stroke of midnight. I had tested and retested all my systems I was abundantly confident nothing would fail to the point I sent a network broadcast out to the whole company about 5 mins before midnight "Millennium bug detected. system shutdown imminent". I messed with them all the time when the call came in the Managing editor was that's you, right?

3) It's been tried and it works... in other, more civilized nations... but again because America is an economy and culture firmly built on slavery and racism, and because Capitalism requires a supply of cheap exploitable labor, and because "ooga booga crime rates" is such an excellent campaign strategy, there is zero political will to actually address the problem.

Meanwhile, communism ensures there is a large supply of cheap exploitable labor.

It sounds reasonable until you realize that it's not paying for all of the expenses, with your tax dollars making up the rest, and that it would cost a lot less to provide actual public services that mitigate the need for prison in the first place. The would-be prisoners could still get a job and keep 100% of their paycheck instead.

I'd love to keep 100% of my paycheck too.

I have my music on speaker when I ride my bike on nature trails. I have yet to find headphones which will stay in over rough terrain. I'm generally riding pretty fast so the amount of time I'm an annoyance is very brief. But number 1 reason is so it alerts hikers so I don't run them over. Also too, I've scared the crap out of many people quietly coming up on them and then alerting I'm over taking.
