Submission + - Pirate Radio is Alive and Growing, Mostly in the Big Cities (ap.org)

K7DAN writes: Just as the demise of terrestrial radio has been greatly exaggerated, so has the assumed parallel death of pirate radio. Due to the failure of licensed stations to meet the needs of many niche communities, pirate radio continues to increase in popularity. Helping facilitate this growth is the weakening power of the FCC to stop it, reports the AP.

Submission + - Canadian & Singapore Researchers Claim Lithium-ion Battery Breakthrough (channelnewsasia.com)

K7DAN writes: Channel News Asia reports that A*STAR's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore and Quebec's IREQ have doubled the capacity of Lithium-ion batteries using a novel technique that involves synthesizing silicate-based nanoboxes as compared to conventional phosphate-based cathodes.

Submission + - Putin Annexes Pandora (rainnews.com)

K7DAN writes: RAIN (Radio and Internet News). APRIL 1, Moscow: In a daring extension of Russia’s growing imperialism, Vladimir Putin today annexed Pandora Radio. A referendum had been scheduled for later this week, which would have provided Pandora citizens the opportunity to vote on the annexation. A spokesperson in Moscow told the United Nations that Russia “skipped” the Pandora vote — presumably one of the six skips per hour allowed by the Internet radio giant.

Submission + - Be a Hero! Help Find Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370

K7DAN writes: Yes, you can help find Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 using the crowd sourcing satellite photo search Website, Tomnod: http://www.tomnod.com/nod/
I've found listening to music and scanning the satellite photos is a great use of the few idle moments I have during the day. The only negative is I wish I could select the search area rather than having it assigned by Tomnod's server or choosing a manually initiated random assignment.

Submission + - MeetUp.com Suffers Substantial DDos Attack (meetup.com) 2

K7DAN writes: The following message appeared at the top of the MeetUp.com Website this morning: “Meetup is currently under DDoS attack. Our services may be up/down intermittently as we seek to restore full functionality.” A few minutes after that, the site was unavailable for almost three hours. But who would DDos MeetUp? And why?

Submission + - Obama Care Requires Java. Shall we call it, "Obama Java?" (wahealthplanfinder.org) 1

K7DAN writes: I decided to check out registration for Obama Care at the State of Washington's Health Plan Finder https://www.wahealthplanfinder.org./ Here's what I found when I started the process (using Chrome):

Warning:
We're sorry but Healthplanfinder requires JavaScript in order to run. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to continue.

If you need help changing your browser's settings please contact the customer support hotline at 1-888-123-4567 between the hours of 8pm and 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Lovely! Now millions of folks who apply for Obama Care will enable Java in their browsers and also enable their computers to be subject to all the security and other problems that ride along with it. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2030778/researchers-javas-security-problems-unlikely-to-be-resolved-soon.html

The most unbelievable aspect to this is government customer service reps helping people change setting on their browsers. What a mess!

Submission + - China computer maker seeks iPad sale ban in Shanghai... (channelnewsasia.com) 1

K7DAN writes: "Apple's battle defending the Ipad trademark in China is taking place in Shanghai. Proview Technology out of Shenzhen, China (a Taiwan affiliated company) claims that it registered the Ipad name in 2000 and the international patent secured by Apple was not properly secured in China. Analysts believe Apple will likely settle the dispute out of court. Chinese courts are notorious for ruling in favor of local companies no matter how strong the case presented by foreigners."

Submission + - Adobe to Abandon Flash Player on Linux (adobe.com) 1

ekimd writes: Adobe has anounced their plans to abandon future updates of their Flash player for Linux. Partnering with Google, after the release of 11.2, "the Flash Player browser plugin for Linux will only be available via the 'Pepper' API as part of the Google Chrome browser distribution and will no longer be available as a direct download from Adobe." Viva la HTML 5!

Submission + - UN pushes plan to regulate the Internet, makes SOPA look like a paper cut (wsj.com)

no0b writes: On Feb. 27, a diplomatic process will begin in Geneva that could result in a new treaty giving the United Nations unprecedented powers over the Internet. Dozens of countries, including Russia and China, are pushing hard to reach this goal by year's end. As Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said last June, his goal and that of his allies is to establish "international control over the Internet" through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a treaty-based organization under U.N. auspices.
" Subsume under intergovernmental control many functions of the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Internet Society and other multi-stakeholder groups that establish the engineering and technical standards that allow the Internet to work;"

Submission + - Catastrophic space weather warning for UK (pcpro.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: The UK Government has been told to shape up or face a catastrophic shutdown due to bad space weather or EMP attacks. A defence committee report found the UK was complacent over the threats, which are increasingly critical as vital services rely on electricity and communications networks. Although EMP fears are nothing new, the report highlighted how damaging an incident could prove and the length of time it would take to recover. “The likelihood of a severe space weather event is assessed to be moderate to high over the next five years, with the potential to cause damage to electrically conducting systems such as power grids, pipelines and signalling circuits,” the report said.
