Comment It's been 36 years... (Score 1) 241

36 years ago, I lived in a province that had daylight saving. I moved to Saskatchewan which doesn't observe daylight saving time.

For 36 years, I can say it's been great to not deal with this 'issue'.

Today after going through this process for the first time in 36 years, I am glad to be back in the normal timezone...

Instagram Tests Sharing Your Location History With Facebook (theverge.com) 26

Instagram is testing a feature that would allow it to share your location data with Facebook, regardless of whether you're using the app or not. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong says the option, which is being tested as a setting you have to opt-in to, allows Facebook products to "build and use a history of precise locations" which the company says "helps you explore what's around you, get more relevant ads and helps improve Facebook." The Verge reports: In a statement to TechCrunch, a spokesperson from Facebook confirmed that there was no guarantee the feature would see a wide release. "We often work on ideas that may evolve over time or ultimately not be tested or released. Instagram does not currently store Location History; we'll keep people updated with any changes to our location settings in the future."

Wong has a history of correctly identifying features like this before they're officially announced. She has previously leaked Facebook's dating application, Instagram's updated two-factor authentication, and Instagram's school bio feature. Facebook is also reportedly testing a map view to see friend's locations, similar to what's already offered by Snapchat. Instagram's data sharing could provide additional data points to power this functionality, while providing Facebook with more data to better target its ads.

EU Accepts Resolution Abolishing Planned Obsolescence, Making Devices Easier to Repair (retaildetail.eu) 342

Long-time Slashdot reader AmiMoJo writes: The European Parliament accepted a resolution to lengthen consumer goods and software's longevity, a counter to the alleged planned obsolescence process built into a lot of products. The European Parliament now wants the European Commission to create a clear definition of the term "planned obsolescence" and to develop a system to track that aging process. It also wants longer warranty periods and criteria to measure a product's strength. Each and every device should also have a mention of its minimal life expectancy.

Devices should also be easier to repair: batteries and other components should be freely accessible for replacement, unless safety dictates otherwise. Manufacturers will also need to give other companies access to their components so that consumers can visit those companies for repairs.

Comment Why do we need GMO grains/foods (Score 1) 461

Well, I am personally against 'round up ready' type things, but is the question regarding this wrapped around:

1) We need to generate more food to feed everyone?
2) We need to grow things to turn into fuel?
3) We need more (and stronger) sprays to kill things because they are resistant to what we are currently spraying?

Now, I am not saying that we shouldn't grow more food... but ultimately this is not sustainable. We have to look at other options instead of grow more to feed everyone.

Fuels... yeah, we really need to fix this... but growing 'food' (corn) to turn it into ethanol so we can burn it in our cars/bus/truck, yeah this isn't the right thing to do either.

Resistance is futile... This is the same as going to the hospital every time you have a sniffle so you can get a drug to fix it. You are going to end up with plants that 'adapt' to this, because that's what happens... The same way that we are getting more and more 'new' diseases/bugs because we are forcing everything to evolve with us.

As an example of this... it's hard for people from Canada / US to go to Mexico and drink the water... why? Because our water is so 'clean' that our systems don't have anything to deal with 'sub standard' water.

Let the fighting begin....
