Journal Iamthefallen's Journal: Random thoughts on thoughts on Steve Irwin 8

First of all, if he had been juggling loaded handguns for a living, we wouldn't be ooohing and aaahing over how good he was at handling them and how much he taught us about firearm safety. We'd say, hey dumbass, stop juggling guns! You're gonna get yourself killed! Quit fucking around with loaded guns!

The guy's had enough close calls that this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Don't get me wrong, he was a cool guy and had an entertaining show. It really sucks for his family, specially with him having young kids. But unlike some thoughts I've seen on it, I don't think there's a great message to take away from this. His show wasn't about wildlife or nature, there's no need to capture koalas and stick a finger up their butt just to educate people on them. There's no need to capture and hold a poisonous snake for the camera, apart from wanting to show off and add drama. There's no message about respecting nature, about being careful, about treating wild animals like wild animals and loaded guns like loaded guns.

Unless you count "Don't fucking get stabbed through the heart by a stingray" as a message.

I had a great weekend, how about you?

In the long run the house wins.
(i.e. Fuck with dangerous animals long enough, and you'll get fucked).

That said, I think his shows DID do quite a bit to get people interested in and excited about animals in the wild (and not in the "good with potatos" sort of way), which was a good thing.

But it wasn't a tragic accident. It was part of the (not so fine) print of the deal he signed up for.

I am sad the world doesn't have him anymore. It would have been nice if he had put in a few more years, retired, and died in his sleep after servicing three supermodels. But I'm not going to shed crocodile (sorry!) tears. He rolled the dice one too many times.
    • In the long run the house wins.

Right, and he kept stressing how dangerous these animals were. Usually just before he picked them up to show everyone just how pretty they were.

Have you seen the video of the ATF agent who shot himself in the leg and still tried to talk gun safety to a school class?
      • I haven't seen the video, however, I think that is in a special class called "dumb fuck". Irwin seemed to take the fact that what he was doing was inherently dangerous into consideration. Had his doctor on the boat, etc. Doesn't mean I'm going to buy into the "tragic accident" BS, but it wasn't caused by sheer stupidity.

The ATF dweeb failed basic gun safety 099 (I'd say 101, but this is remedial stuff): Treat EVERY gun as if it is loaded at ALL times. Unless you JUST unloaded it and cleared the action and i
  • Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Time to get it on You Tube.
  • I think it's sad that he went out with a fluke injury like this. I would have much rather seen him go out getting eaten by a croc or bitten by one of the venomous snakes he liked to hold.

Although in those cases, there were probably people off camera ready to rush in and help. Nobody expected a stingray...

You can't cheat the phone company.
