SpaceShipTwo Design and Pics Released 245

An anonymous reader writes "Designs and photos for Scaled Composites and Virgin Galactic's new suborbital spacecraft, SpaceShipTwo, and its carrier aircraft, WhiteKnightTwo, have been released." Lots of specs and numbers if you're interested in that sort of thing although nothing hugely detailed.

Submission + - VBA Going Away, Mac's Now, PC's Soon 2

Nom du Keyboard writes: As Microsoft drops support for older Office file formats, it looks like Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is also going soon. Mac Office 2008 has dropped it in favor of enhanced support for AppleScript, and Office 2009 is scheduled to lose it in favor of Mac incompatible Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA) or Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO). This sounds like the Mother of All Backwards and Cross-Platform Incompatibilities — especially since there appears to be no transition period where both the old and new scripting languages will be simultaneously supported. And as past experience with Visual Studio .NET has shown, upgrade tools are far less than perfect. So is Microsoft shooting themselves in the upgrade foot here?

UK Schools At Risk of Microsoft Lock-In 162

Robert writes "UK schools and colleges that have signed up to Microsoft Corp's academic licensing programs face the significant potential of being locked in to the company's software, according to an interim review by Becta, the UK government agency responsible for technology in education. The report also states that most establishments surveyed do not believe that Microsoft's licensing agreements provide value for money." In a separate report, Becta offered the opinion that schools should avoid Vista for at least another year, since neither Vista nor Office 2007 offers any compelling reasons for schools to upgrade.

Submission + - Windows Home Server details.

phorest writes: Having read many of the comments from the previous /. article, It appears Microsoft will open up Windows Home Server for users to construct their own system after all, though I'd like to see the price of this OS release before making that jump.

Paul Thurrot at WinSuperSite writes: "At the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week (see my special report), Microsoft previewed its long-awaited Windows Home Server (WHS) product [Link to review], a Windows Server 2003 R2-based server for consumers that dispenses with the complexities of most Windows Server versions and provides the core storage, sharing, and remote access functionality that digital media and home networking enthusiasts require."

"Microsoft will make WHS available in two ways: Bundled with new WHS hardware and software-only, the latter so that enthusiasts can install the system on the hardware of their choice.
If you're building your own home server, Microsoft requires a 1 GHz processor or better, 512 MB of RAM or more, and as many disks as you think you need. The company will support multiple home servers on the same network, but it's still murky how that will work."

Proper Ways to Dispose of Spam? 119

An anonymous reader asks: "My domain name is being stolen by spammers; they forge outgoing mail using my poor innocent domain name. First, I'd like to plead with mail server administrators out there: please REJECT spam and undeliverable mail. If you reject instead of bouncing then legitimate mail senders will still know there is a problem. Second, do you have any tips for dealing with a flood of spam bounces? Exim is pitching the bounces pretty quickly, but my server is still getting overwhelmed." In the case of stolen sender addresses, SPF attempts to address this problem but has it been effective?

Journal Journal: Searching for that one Operating System

Well FreeBSd is still not up and running but it's scaled back to the point where at least there are no errors when starting X Windows.

I am starting to appreciate the elegance of FreeBSd compared to Linux though, and the package mangement is a delight, compared to RPM at least.

Of course, just as I start to play with one OS option Apple announce a new drop-dead gorgeous PowerBook with a 17" Screen - now that really puts the cat among the pigeons.

Well finally got there - FreeBSD up 'n' running! We have X-Windows, we have Gnome, we have no applications to run 'cause it's such a minimal installation.
