Why the focus on games? Sure I understand that there are millions of people that enjoy playing video games for entertainment, but the problem is much bigger than just games. There are all kinds of software that is switched off when the company produces it decides it isn’t worthwhile any more. The focus should be on a law that compels vendors to ensure software that requires access to an online license server can continue to run within once that server is shut down. If the software has a cloud based element, it should be possible to allow the client to choose an alternative service through a configuration option, so that should another provider either commercial or free and open wishes to provide a compatible service, the purchaser can continue to use the software they paid for.

The fundamental problem is the post office not seeing IT as a core function of its business, this is shown by outsourcing IT functions. If you treat IT as a commodity like your electricity supply or office cleaning then you will never get a system that provides a competitive advantage to the company. Sure, if you are a small company where off the shelf solutions for your industry meet your needs, then fine in house IT specialism is not a core part of your business. Once you require large scale bespoke systems IT is very much a core part of your business, that needs proper investment and in house expertise with a seat at the top table.

This is largely driven by the use of FPGAs instead of custom chips. Because ASICs are expensive to develop and cannot be updated in the field, manufacturers choose to use FPGAs, when powered on they must load their configuration before any OS can load and start addressing them. Added to this is the trend to put a full desktop OS on even the simplest device instead of a dedicated embedded OS because it makes life easier for the developers.

I doubt people will be willing to pay double the price for a console as would be the case with today’s memory and storage prices. Perhaps an opportunity to delay a bit and use the time to significantly optimise things to the point that the wait will be worth it.

Not really, if the economics change such that producers have to pay for specialist garment processing, like we have to pay for WEEE waste, it may reach a point where companies reduce their production runs to better meet demand, or keep selling an item for longer until sold through.

I work in a UK university and the number of applicants that have issues is increasing all the time, it may be just a reflection of a general societal problem of over diagnosis, but I suspect it is an attempt to game the system.
