Sweden also faired better than the U.S. with a lower rate of "excess deaths". Florida locked down far less than California and has had a covid higher death rate. But Florida has a much higher percentage of senior citizens and when you do a comparison of deaths adjusted for age ranges California and Florida are close. The biggest tragedy of the lockdowns were grade school children. Poor children especially on the whole suffered from the switch to remote learning, being far more likely to slip between the cracks.
