Journal FroMan's Journal: WoW 10

Last wednesday we were supposed to have a couples loads of dirt and gravel dropped off and we (wife and I) took the ay off to get some work done at home. But supposed to and what happened are two different things. The previous night we were chatting with some friends who play WoW and they basically sold us on the idea of playing.

So, when the dirt didn't show up we ran out and grabbed a couple copies. Then proceeded to spend more hours than are pleseant trying to get windows 2000 working on our machines (btw, sp4 is pretty much required to play WoW).

WoW is great compared to EQ. So many of the problems of EQ were addressed in WoW to make it actually a fun and interesting game.

* Quests: There are quests beyond 1-10 and > uber high level. Infact, instead of the majority of your expreience coming from grinding away killing mobs, it mostly comes from quests.

* Rest Exp: This is a huge boon for casual gamers. This allows a person with a RL to actually get double exp for a little while if they logout in a city/inn. So, the exp you get from killing mobs is actually decent.

* Tradeskills: They work. For my paladin who has smithing I have actually made weapons and armor I wear, at low level! Basically instead of making useless stuff to sell and pray you recover a little cost, you can actually use the stuff you create.

* Twinking: Most items have a level limit so twinking is far less of a plague for real newbies. Instead of having level 1s running around slaughtering everything with their +5 vorpal snicker-snee, pretty much everyone is on equal footing.

* Death: Instead of running harrowing corpse runs naked, you are a ghost running back to your corpse which then can choose where to rez (within 30 yardsish) of your corpse. Also you are fully equipped when rezzed, instead of having to do it while being attacked. Or if you don't want to CR, you can just rez at the graveyard your ghost pops at. The big disadvantge is 10% eq damage on your items.

* EQ damage: Items slowly decay as you use them and must be repaired. As such, you need to return to town occasionally to fix them, but this costs a little cash and helps to keep an economy under control.

* Highspeed: The game is very highspeed. Instead of sitting around waiting for mana or hp regen, you can pretty much stay active the entire time. This allows more play time, less grind time.

* Accurate assesment: When you con a mob it seems to give a pretty accurate assesment of the mob (so far at level 15). Instead of an "even con" on a mob ensuring your demise, an "even con" is actually pretty tough, but do-able.

Overall we are quite happy with the game. If you burned out on EQ, this will be quite a bit more refreshing. It is fun and rewarding. Blizzard really hit the sweet spot for us on this game. Instead of catoring to the UBERS, they have created a game that cators to the casual gamer. Possibley this will keep the UBERS playing EQ instead of messing with WoW.

  • I just cancelled my account for one reason: I was playing alone. I had purchased the game to play with my brother and friends, but since we're all at wildly different levels, we can't really do things together. So instead I got my XBox with Live and I'm having a blast.

    WoW is awesome though.

    • Nod, a problem with any mmo game.

Atleast with my wife I am pretty much always assured a group. Also, while I haven't joined a guild yet in WoW, that is another way to go for grouping. At some point when we get a couple levels higher we'll join one with our friends.

One thing we have noticed with WoW though is that at lower levels (pre 15 atleast) is that large groups wouldn't really help much. Once we get to instance dungeons I am sure larger groups will matter.

  • What server?

I'm starting to play more on a PvP server (much fun when you can take down a real player trying to raid Ogrimmar or Undercity). (I also have a L53 human priest and L37 Tauren Shaman on a pve server). I'm on Laughing Skull and my chars are L40 Priest 'Shirlexi', L13 Shaman 'Sparkies' and L23 Mage 'Shabbas'. All horde (undead and orc). I'm still playing WoW for many of the reasons you've stated (even Je'd a few times :) ). Let me know if you guys are wanting to join a PvP server and if so, we

      • Ah, that sucks... I didn't realize rez did additional damage. Maybe they should rethink that as most grave yards so far as within reasonable distance. Oh-well... I just got my first rez spell yesterday.
    • We are already on PvP Warsong (Tombie dwarf paladin, Mileya night elf druid). Basically a remake of our original EQ characters. We are 16ish right now, and we started last Wednesday to give an idea of our pace, we'll see if that keeps up though.
      • You'll find at the levels of 20+ where you are adventuring in contested areas, things can get awry real fast. As an alliance player I don't think you'll have to worry much since in most cases as the population favors Alliance 3:1. Regardless, my hardest journey was from level 20-30 as those contested areas were frequented by level 40+'s. Hopefully the honor system will fix that in the future. On our server, Ogrimmar, Thunder Bluff and Undercity are raided every weekend by two raid groups consisting of l
