Could be. But then, now that the recipient has made the news, there's always the chance that whoever came forward with it would return it if convinced of the rightful owner. But how many scam artists will come forward, claiming remorse and trying to collect it?

Reminds me of the passage in American Gods about an old scam, where someone goes in with money that looks suspicious, to buy expensive jewelry. The owner checks with a bank and told it's legit. On the way out, the purchaser is collared by a supp

So, I finished the book, and yes, I know exactly what you meant. I must admit I was rather confused by quite a few aspects of the book, which I hesitate to post here for fear of spoilers. But in the end it was fun.
