Submission + - Worlds.com claims patent on virtual worlds

FiveRings writes: Businessinsider.com has a story on Worlds.com indicating that they somehow inherited the patent on virtual worlds from the Starlight Starbright Foundation and is taking it to court against NCsoft. If successful, he will press on and sue Second Life and World of Warcraft as well. IncGamers adds, "The case against NCSoft is being held in East Texas which, according to Business Insider, is a jurisdiction that is known to have ruled in favour of the plaintiff against foreigners in patent cases once or twice before."

Google Founders Buy Fighter Jet 356

Ponca City, We love you writes "The NY Times reports that H211 LLC, a company controlled by Google's top executives, including billionaire founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, appears to have added to its fleet a Dornier Alpha Jet, a light jet attack and advanced trainer aircraft manufactured by Dornier of Germany and Dassault-Breguet of France. The 1982 Alpha-Jet seats two and was originally used by European air forces, but is now being sold relatively cheaply to civilians. The jet has landing rights at Moffett Field, the NASA-operated airfield that is a stone's throw from the Google campus. It is not clear who exactly flies the fighter jet, although Google chief executive Eric Schmidt is an avid pilot. If the top Googlers indeed own the fighter jet, they would be following in the footsteps of Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison, who has owned several aircraft, including fighter jets."

Oh I know all about the potential for story in the Warcraft universe. You nailed the problem; it's an MMORPG. If you ask me, they already came up with something better than grinding. Warcraft I through III were brilliant, fun games. I suspect the problem now is simply a matter of greed. Quality, one-purchase games such as Warcraft III are - while highly successful - not the money-making machines that the ex-EQ developers and managers want, so they don't make them anymore. It's even more depressing that so many people play these games. As consumers, it's really our fault.

It seems that you're so anti-MMO that you're not seeing the whole picture. Blizzard, alone, has StarCraft2 and Diablo3 in the works, likely funded by WoW money. I would hope those fall under your "quality, one-purchase games" category?
