Journal Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Vote Edward Brand-Grantham in 2040 23
The Big E, as his friends (well, his dad) call him, came in at 5060 grams (11 pounds 2 ounces) and 54 cm (21 inches). And he's a redhead*. Healthy and amazingly strong already, with all the limbs and bits in all the right places. And now I understand all the jokes about the size of the family jewels when they're born...
Ended up being a Cesarean -- apparently the gynecologist miscalculated E's size by a mile, just like the midwives at the clinic were saying (the gynecologist missed it by 1.5 kg) and his head was just too big, and BoE's belly too extended, to get him out the natural way. She was having contractions for the past couple of days, but didn't even feel them -- because her belly muscles were so stretched. The cervix hadn't dilated at all, again because her muscles just weren't able to push him down far enough.
(I explained to BoE that this is why E kept punching her bladder. He thought it was the doorbell, but Mommy wouldn't open the damn door.)
BoE and Big E are doing well. Duly went through the first diaper change and first bath already, and Daddy got peed on (just like he peed on the doctor back in the day), much to the nurse's and a nearby breastfeeding mother's amusement.
Daddy held Big E on his lap for a couple hours before going home past midnight, and got backache from it already.
The only disappointment -- I was really hoping for Feb. 29th, not because I seriously wanted to deprive E of presents (though the Swabian** anesthesiologist agreed that would be a good idea), but just because it would have been something special (he could have always celebrated on March 1st or something). Ah well, ended up being the 27th.

* - Yup, he's got a full head of hair. From his size and hair, one passing nurse asked what the two-month-old was doing in the nursery...
** - Swabians are Germany's answer to the "thrifty Scot". Indeed, Germans claim Swabians are the Scots who were exiled for being tightwads. And yes, I have Swabian -- and Scottish -- ancestors...

Just kidding. Here's hoping that your next kid doesn't take as much time making his grand entrance. I'll leave the placenta cake questions to someone else.
