Comment TalkTalk is the worst ISP I have ever had. (Score 2) 227

I'm not surprised they can't get filters right, they can't get anything right. I joined TalkTalk in December last year as the price is attractive. They are the worst ISP I have ever had the misfortune to sign up with. Go-Live dates that came and went, with no connection. Engineer visits. Incorrect billing. Horrible network congestion rendering internet use nigh on impossible during peak times. The list is endless with my woes. My 12 month contract is up in a few days and I will never re-sign with this company.

There is a reason this company has been listed as the worst ISP in the UK as defined by complaints to Ofcom (UK ombudsman) http://media.ofcom.org.uk/2013/09/27/latest-telecoms-and-pay-tv-complaints-figures-3/

Google don't think much of our quaint European privacy regulations however:
"American companies will come out big winners, compared to their European rivals. European companies face decades of innovation-paralysis under the new rules. American companies will just reorganize and relocate certain operations out of Europe to mitigate risk."

Comment Cleaning my Dad's PC just yesterday with MSSE (Score 1) 228

I've had MSSE on my dad's laptop for a few years now. He recently mentioned his laptop was very slow, so I guessed it was overdue for some maintenance. A quick look at task manager immediately flagged up stdrt.exe using lots of resources so I got MSSE running while I checked online to find out what this thing was. It's not new by any stretch and looks to be fairly commonplace. MSSE failed to find anything, even when I scanned the executable directly. I had to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove it (which it did quickly and easily).

I've removed MSSE and set him up with AVG Free and Malwarebytes.

So true! I propose the immediate waterboarding of ALL Youtube contributers, especially Rick Astley fans, you just can't be too careful.~

Two Totally Unique Star Systems Discovered 141

esocid writes "Astronomers have spied a faraway star system that is so unusual, it was one of a kind — until its discovery helped them pinpoint a second one that was much closer to home. In a paper published in a recent issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters, Ohio State University astronomers and their colleagues suggest that these star systems are the progenitors of a rare type of supernova. In research funded by the National Science Foundation, they found a star system that is unusual, because it's what the astronomers have called a 'yellow supergiant eclipsing binary' — it contains two very bright, massive yellow stars that are very closely orbiting each other. In fact, the stars are so close together that a large amount of stellar material is shared between them, so that the shape of the system resembles a peanut."

IBM Suspended From US Federal Contracts 136

theodp writes "IBM has been temporarily banned from receiving future contracts with federal agencies, the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed on Monday. The suspension went into effect last Thursday due to 'concerns raised about potential activities involving an EPA procurement,' the agency said in an e-mailed statement. Under a reciprocal agreement among federal agencies, when one issues a ban, the others follow it. The EPA said it will not comment further on the matter. An IBM spokesman said he had no immediate comment. 'You don't see this very often, particularly for large companies,' commented a stunned industry analyst, mentioning a bankrupt MCI as a notable exception. IBM earned an estimated $1.5 billion in revenue from federal prime contracts in fiscal 2007."

OOXML Will Pass Amid Massive Irregularities 329

Tokimasa notes a CNet blog predicting that OOXML will make the cut. Updegrove agrees, as does the OpenMalasia blog. Reports of irregularities continue to surface, such as this one from Norway — "The meeting: 27 people in the room, 4 of which were administrative staff from Standard Norge. The outcome: Of the 24 members attending, 19 disapproved, 5 approved. The result: The administrative staff decided that Norway wants to approve OOXML as an ISO standard." Groklaw adds reportage of odd processes in Germany and Croatia.
