Submission + - Taiwan's high 20% tariff rate linked to Intel investment (notebookcheck.net)

EreIamJH writes: German tech newsletter NotebookCheck is reporting that the unexpectedly high 20% tariff the USA recently imposed against Taiwan is intended to pressure TSMC to buy a 49% minority stake in Intel including IP transfer and also spend $400 billion in the US in addition to the $176 billion previously required.

Submission + - Google's new meta-tags for news story authors (blogspot.com)

EreIamJH writes: Google News is experimenting with meta-tags in an effort to ensure that the correct news source is credit with an article. The original-source meta-tag will identify the newspaper that brakes a story, while syndication-source is for everyone who repeats the story. Both meta-tags can appear multiple times — for instance an article that sources information from other articles would include an original-source tag for each article used in preparing the new article. While the intention is worthy, I look forward to lots of snarky blogger fights as journalists vent their hurt feelings for having been omitted as an original source.

Submission + - New coms satellite abandoned due to orbital patent (space-travel.com)

EreIamJH writes: AMC-14, a commercial geostationary satellite launched last month, failed to reach its intended orbit. The owner wanted to shunt the satellite into a useful orbit by slingshoting it around the moon, but the plan (and the new satellite) was abandoned when Boeing claimed that it had a patent on that orbital manoeuvre.
