Journal Em Emalb's Journal: things I think 27

NBC is doing a HORRIBLE job on the olympics. While I am not opposed to looking at bikini-clad women, the Olympics aren't about that. How about showing a couple other sports, eh guys?

Jesus, you'd think we were all a bunch of pasty white no life having geeks hiding in our living room eating pizza and retaping our glasses. Bah, dipshits. Stop showing only the "sexy" sports. There's other stuff out there.

IMO, We are too quick to call things diseases these days. This is based off of rdewald's thought provoking journal. You have him friended, go read it, respond, enjoy. Now, that being said:

I come from a family of alcoholics. They just can't say no to the booze. Typical Irish ancestry. My grandfather drank so much for so long the doctors told him "quit or die", you've killed off 2/3rds of your liver. When my dad passed on, the first thing we all thought was I wonder if he drank himself to death? (How fucked is that, btw? Again, typical Irish family)

Anyhow, you could make a case that this is a hereditary disease, right? Grandfather had it, dad had it, I should have it to, right? This is the point in the show where you would be wrong. How can it be a disease if you *choose* to do it? For example, smoking is not a disease, why is alcoholism? (Or obesity, for that matter?) Is it a symptom of something? Absolutely. But it's not a disease. Why? Why not a disease? Because I can choose not to smoke. I can choose not to drink, I can choose not to over eat. I can't choose whether or not I get cancer*.

If you have a choice, how is it a disease?

TMP wrote a journal entry that (I'm thinking) was designed to show how hopeless he feels because he doesn't feel like it matters whether or not he does anything with his life, and that he doesn't mind it at all. Except by the very nature of his raging against the machine (every other journal he's ever written :) ), he shows he does care. But let's keep this secret between us, huh?

We are too politically correct these days. I wish more people would just be honest and say what they think (tactfully) rather than tread around like they are walking on glass. It's just life, people! Live it!

I took Leons' linked to political quiz....My ideal candidate is 47% different from the nearest actual candidate. In other words, the closest to what I think is (holy shit!) John Kerry. He matches a whopping 53% of what I believe in. (Bush was 41%) As I said before, none of these guys speak for me. And contrary to what that one asshole** says, chosing the lesser of two evils is not a choice I want to make.

Anything else I miss?

Ah yes: THIS JUST IN: SomeWoman is not (I REPEAT) NOT A SQUIRREL. Thank you.

*except by not smoking, and even then, lung cancer still happens. Gah, I hate cancer. Horrible disease.

I agree, especially because I don't have cable. I can watch coverage from like 8 to 10PM (I go to bed at 10PM, I'm old I guess). The two sports that I was really interested in (cycling and judo) I saw a total of 2 minutes of coverage. Yeah I missed the road race on the weekend (I was out riding my bike, go figure), but I s

  • Smoking and drinking are usually considered addictions, not diseases. The hereditary part goes towards susceptibility to the addiction.

The thing is that addictions can be overcome by strength of will, it can just be more difficult to overcome for some than for others.

(One might even argue that you've replaced drinking with polling. :-D )
    • Nah, I polled all the while I was getting fatter and smoking :)

You just didn't know it at the time.

Addictions are not diseases. I agree with that statement.
      • I think that the problem is that people think that something that is "treatable" is a disease. Just because you can fix something (to an extent) doesn't make it a disease. Yes, people should get treatment for their addictions if that's what it takes, but it's still not a disease.
        • Someone once tried to prove to me that alcholism was a disease by citing all the symptoms:
-Jerky eye movement or loss of central vision
-Damage to nerves causing numbness and tingling
-Weakness and numbness in the arms or legs
          -Hypertension, particularly systolic
          -Gastrointestinal or other bleeding
-Cirrhosis or other evidence of liver impairment, such as edema in the lower extremities, and other signs of fluid retention
-Psoriasis and signs of immunodeficient disorders
          -Blah blah blah.

I pointed out that those ar

Strangely enough, I share a similar feeling, only my world is and but Bush and Kerry. There isn't a viable choice anymore from the big parties.

I'm thinking of writing in my wife, but she'd probably be mad at me if she won.
  • I haven't seen any of it. No TV, and I've been at the lake. I never liked the Olympics that much. Someone let me know when they get Wakeboarding, Sea Doo racing, Hot tubbing, or Boating added as an event. :-)
  • Michael Badnarik (libertarian) matched me 86%
    Next was "Dub-ya" at 43%
    Kerry was a whopping 16%

Nice to see that regardless of who wins the election, chances are neither will be even close to representing my interests. *sigh*

Not too surprising, other than that Kerry managed to score as high as he did. Given how he's already to the left

How about showing some replays? We happened to be watching the gymnastics yesterday and instead of replaying the insane flips and moves so we could see what the hell the athletes did they'd just keep the camera on the next guy for 5 minutes while waiting for him to get ready. The whole coverage could use a few pointers from the

  • First the Olympics. I really like the Olypmics and I try and watch as much as I can. It is great to bring to whole world together and not have anybody shooting. Besides the back drop of Greece is amazing. That said, I do have a few bones to pick.

There needs to be an end to adding sports to the Olympics. My list of non-Olympic events (notice the lack of the word sport):

    • Beach Babe Volleyball - Ok, the sport is ok but I come away feeling like it was a Victoria's Secret commercial or something

  • Well, I am registered Libertarian for a reason. However, I found that the "positions" don't always represent the actualities. I'm surprised to have such a large percentage on Bush - even if he did bottom-out my list.
