Journal Em Emalb's Journal: I bet on baseball 30

And my name is Pete Rose.

Once again, this idiot is back in the news.

This is an awesome PR ploy by Charlie Hustle, just think, he is putting out a new book, and what better way to sell it.

I have know all along the idiot bet on baseball, this just proves it.

A lot of you are gonna say so what, so he bet, who cares.

Well, as a fan, you should. He lied for a decade and a half.

Whatever.

Oh, I'll get to some of those rants later.

A poll:

Does the fact that he admits his transgressions change your opinion of Pete Rose in anyway?

A) Who?

B) No

C) undecided

D) Yes.

  • Doesn't change a thing. I always thought he should've been banned from actively participating in baseball because he bet while participating. Likewise, I've always thought that he should've been in the Hall of Fame because he is th emost prolific hitter in the history and things he did off the field (regardless if it was about effects on the field) should have no bearing on HoF status.

      • Sorry Em, I'm afriad that Ab is right on pretty much every point. But I'll be your second if you get involved in a "pistols at dawn" type of thing, because I respect you, and I think you're a stand up guy.

That reminds me of a commercial I saw a few years ago. I can't seem to find any links to it but basically it was Piazza standing behind a backstop while a voiceover stated:

Announcer: "People complain that baseball is too slow and boring."

Piazza: "Going to a baseball game lets you relax and forget about your problems for an afternoon."

Flashing disclaimer at the bottom of the screen: "Offer not valid for Cubs or Red Sox fans."

  • Meh?
  • I now think he's a bigger ass than before. He clearly has an agenda and is thinking only of himself. I've never heard him apologize for the damage he did to the game, and any apology he would offer up now would probably be seen as insincere and just there to further his plans.

He doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself.
    • Damage he did to the game???

When is the last time you heard someone say "Bah, baseball, I ain't watchin that now that Pete Rose got caught betting on it"? Yeah I didn't think so. I think constant whining and the strike did a hell of a lot more damage to the game. In my opinion they should have given a lifetime ban to all those that chose to strike.
  • I used to think that the powers that be (MLB, the Baseball Hall of Fame) should just relent and let Pete Rose back into the fold but something that Rob Neyer wrote last year changed my mind for me.

Neyer, who's a fantastic writer, simply pointed out that when Rose got into trouble the MLB rules on betting were unambiguous: if you bet on baseball then the punishment is a lifetime ban. Not a possible lifetime ban but an automatic lifetime ban with no if's and no but's.(The relevant rules are still the same to
    • <disclaimer> I care very little for baseball in general, and/or Pete Rose in particular.</disclaimer>

What does a lifetime ban from baseball(playing or participating in the games played) have to do with the Hall of Fame(being acknowledged for the skill displayed when you were playing)? Seems like two different animals to me.

      • Because the punishment includes removal of eligibility from the Hall of Fame.

Unlike the Pro [American] Football Hall of Fame, which is independent of the NFL or any other body, baseball's HOF is the property of MLB.

Another factor which is relevant in elevation to the MLB HOF but almost irrelevant to the PFHOF is character: MLB HOF nominees are judged on their character as well as their performance on the field, whereas PFHOF nominees are judged solely on the relevant portion of their football careers.

  • I still like Pete.
I don't think what he did was wrong, unless he threw a game.
If he did that he needs to be totally eradicated.
Sure he's making money of the contraversy, but so what. It's been part of his life for 20 years, might as well make a buck.
I never liked him when he was playing against "my team" but he was a person everyone wanted on thier team.

    Here's to Pete!
Let him in the HoF. his records are already there.

Is he some kind of footballer or something? I seriously have no idea who this guy is... Nor do I care to be honest...
  • Baseball sucks, Pete Rose sucks, your heroes suck, and lsahdsot sucks.
  • MLB gives every single ball player with a substance abuse problem a second, third, fourth, and fifth chance (see: Daryl Strawberry and Steve Howe), why is Pete Rose different?

Rose has no admitted everything and he paid his debt to society (jail time and IRS fines) and he sought help for his addiction.

Why is Rose any different than Strawberry (who is coaching for the Yanks) or Howe? Or Paul Molitor? Or any player who is abusing steroids (see: Jason Giambi)?

Rose should be in the hall of fame. Next year.
    • Hell yeah. I am not a huge Baseball fan, but I live in Cincy and am sick of the hype. He's no worse than a drug addict (actually, I'd say it is no where NEAR as bad as a drug addict) so he shouldn't be treated like he has the plague.

Reinstate, hall of fame, let him manage a team or two and retire. Lets just get this shit over with.

Oh, and I also think Mr.Lawrence Taylor should be in the football hall of fame just cause he's the reason the LB position has been so prolific since he played. He literall
      • LT is one of the rare great ones. He is one athelete that people never compare to a past athelete. For example, people say Urlacher dominates like and his style resembles LT. No one ever said LT resembles anyone else.

No doubt that LT should be in the HoF. Yes he had his battle with crack, but if I'm not mistaken he got (is getting) help for his addiction.

I second the notion that enough is enough with Pete. Put him in the HoF. Now. Give him the respect he earned as a player. I don't really care whet
    • Well put. Let's also not ignore our andro abusing overlords.

How about a compromise: Pete Rose is reinstated to MLB posthumously? IOW, the 'lifetime ban' stands, but he is allowed in. Kinda like letting Moses see the promised land, but not letting him enter.

        • You probably did post it. It then festered in the back of my mind until it became a good idea.

The guy is/was all about getting into the HOF. (Maybe he could submit a story to /.??) By doing it posthumously, even if announced today, he would never be totally sure he really would be in. It would send a strong message, but would also honor his accomplishments as a player.

Ahh, here's a story on the subject on The News Hour right now...
        • What's even worse about Shoeless Joe's case is that not only was he a better hitter than Pete Rose, he was quite clearly less mentally aware and unable to tell that he was doing something wrong (Shoeless Joe was, without wanting to mince words, mentally defficient).

Rose knew he did something wrong, Shoeless Joe didn't. Rose was able to make up his own mind and acted accordingly, Shoeless Joe wasn't and was used by other less scrupulous individuals.

Frankly, I know which I think was the better ball player a
  • I have several boxes of baseball cards and a LOT of Pete Rose cards. I'm hoping he gets in the hall of fame so I can sell them for $$$. I gave up on baseball a long time ago. Baseball players are all greedy whiny little snots and I don't care about any of them. If I can unload my cards on someone and make some money, I'm all for him getting into the HoF.

Dude, is that meant to be ironic?
      • yes, in a way. When I started collecting baseball cards it was because I liked the game and the players and it was about friends and trading cards and having fun. We didn't care about the money. Now, baseball is about salaries, bonuses, marketing, commercials, and money. Nobody cares about the game. So, forget it, I'll try to cash in like everyone else. I stopped caring about the game a long time ago.
