Doesn't help that they always require new users have a gmail account. Can't think too many prospective users are happy at the prospect of having yet another email account to monitor / manage.

I know none of my non-gmail using friends would be interested in testing any google service that requires they get such an account.

Comment Google social networking efforts doomed to fail (Score 1) 167

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Until Google stop insisting on users of their social networking products also use gmail for email those products are going nowhere.

Very few people are going to be willing to switch their primary mail account or go through the hassle of redirecting/checking mail in gmail as a secondary account. This is probably doubly true when said products are deeply average.

Google will never grab any noticeable share of the social networking market until they stop insisting that those wanting to make use of those services also must use gmail for their email.

Sure, you can work around that with forwarding of emails from your gmail account, but it's an extra step and setting it up is something of a hassle.

Changing the screen resolution is exactly the same (ie impossible) on all distributions as well. The fact that it is impossible may have confused you.

Nonsense - I just did it on an Intrepid install running XFCE: Settings Manager -> Display -> Select from list of available resolutions -> Click 'OK'. Done. Or maybe I just need more coffee to realise what I just did is actually impossible.
