Comment Where's the doom and gloom? (Score 1) 115

I remember when people said we'd get "package" type deals from internet companies. That never happened. Can anyone point to anything that came as a result of removing "net neutrality" laws other than removing red tape? I'm genuinely asking. I'm down to grab my pitchfork, but I'm not sure what to get upset about. It's been six years. Before you jump down my throat, I'm not arguing against it. I'm just saying John Oliver promised that if net neutrality is removed streaming services and internet providers would vastly change. That hasn't happened at all. Moreover, it appeared that internet providers wanted corporations to pay for increased speeds, not consumers. And before you say "You don't think the streaming company will just pass it on to you?" my answer is no, I don't pay for streaming services, so I really don't care. AND I completely understand that you WANT me to care so that YOU don't have to pay more for your streaming subscription, but then just call this what it is, it's not the end of the internet, it's some people have to pay more for things they're subscribed to. And yes, I understand that the internet providers COULD instead go after consumers "pay for the high-speed streaming service package" which would be something I'd be against, but then this is a solution looking for a problem because as far as I'm aware, none of them are doing it yet. IF they do, then grab your pitchfork. But otherwise, where's the apocalypse we were promised?

Submission + - Edward Snowden Granted Permanent Residency in Russia (securityweek.com)

wiredmikey writes: Fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden has been granted permanent residency in Russia, his lawyer said on Thursday. Snowden, the former US intelligence contractor who revealed in 2013 that the US government was spying on its citizens, has been living in exile in Russia since the revelations. Snowden is wanted in the United States on espionage charges after he leaked information showing that agents from the NSA were collecting telephone records of millions of US citizens.

Submission + - New Tesla FSD Beta Rolls Out To Rave Reviews 1

Rei writes: "Oh, it's going dude!" "But there's no lanes — there's cars on the side of the road!" "DUDE, its navigating through it ALL, bro!" ... "It paused to look DUDE!" "There's NO LANES! Elon, you madman!" Such was one of the many reaction videos to come out overnight as Tesla released a major upgrade of Autopilot to a limited public beta. Complete with a new LIDAR-like visualization system, the car now provides a detailed display of how it perceives the world as it dodges parked cars, takes unprotected left turns with cross traffic and pedestrians, etc. No issues have been reported thusfar, although one driver aborted after a roundabout due to a panicked passenger who didn't like how it exited into a lane with parked cars ahead (though the screen showed that it planned to change lanes to go around them).

The new version is the result of a long-running "4D" rewrite at Tesla, to overcome local maxima in earlier versions. Instead of processing each camera individually as a static series of frames, the neural net now processes a unified stitch of inputs over time, allowing context to persist between cameras and between frames. This in particular enhances parallax processing of depth input, both in terms of parallax between camera viewpoints and parallax between vehicle positions. If the public beta goes well, Elon is hopeful that Tesla will be able to roll out the new version broadly by the end of the year.

Submission + - Amazon Launches Program To Pay Consumers For Their Data On Non-Amazon Purchases (techcrunch.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Amazon has launched a new program that directly pays consumers for information about what they’re purchasing outside of Amazon.com and for responding to short surveys. The program, Amazon Shopper Panel, asks users to send in 10 receipts per month for any purchases made at non-Amazon retailers, including grocery stores, department stores, drug stores and entertainment outlets (if open), like movie theaters, theme parks and restaurants. Amazon’s own stores, like Whole Foods, Amazon Go, Amazon Four Star and Amazon Books do not qualify.

Program participants will take advantage of the newly launched Amazon Shopper Panel mobile app on iOS and Android to take pictures of paper receipts that qualify or they can opt to forward emailed receipts to receipts@panel.amazon.com to earn a $10 reward that can then be applied to their Amazon Balance or used as a charitable donation. Amazon says users can then earn additional rewards each month for every survey they complete. The optional surveys will ask about brands and products that may interest the participant and how likely they are to purchase a product. Other surveys may ask what the shopper thinks of an ad. These rewards may vary, depending on the survey.
