First, much of what the president says publicly will be heavily screened. It’s likely a team of advisors will focus on "training" the new president to maintain a calculated and benign tone. It may reveal an extra thick layer of insulation — not normally used by any past president. As a result, squeaking something like this out will likely pass heavier screening than normal. Second, curiosity in this subject — to the level of intent, are typical of a personal inclination towards: science, a sensitivity/interest in humans as a species, technology, and a drive for absolute truth in the origins of human life. To this, it could be said the president might not care enough to look into it, and were this so, still must pass the extra heavy filters around him. Each new president has a break-in phase. During this phase, the vigour and intent they go in with, is quickly calmed by the realization of many things that simply cannot be known outside the position — like winning the position of class president, only to find out you can’t change the length or recess to 30 minutes — only these are far deeper revelations changing their demeanour.

Print-On-Demand Bone Could Quickly Mend Major Injuries (sciencemag.org) 27

sciencehabit quotes a report from Science Magazine: If you shatter a bone in the future, a 3D printer and some special ink could be your best medicine. Researchers have created what they call "hyperelastic bone" that can be manufactured on demand and works almost as well as the real thing, at least in monkeys and rats. Though not ready to be implanted in humans, bioengineers are optimistic that the material could be a much-needed leap forward in quickly mending injuries ranging from bones wracked by cancer to broken skulls. Researchers at Northwestern University, Evanston, in Illinois are working on a hyperelastic bone, which is a type of scaffold made up of hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring mineral that exists in our bones and teeth, and a biocompatible polymer called polycaprolactone, and a solvent. Hydroxyapatite provides strength and offers chemical cues to stem cells to create bone. The polycaprolactone polymer adds flexibility, and the solvent sticks the 3D-printed layers together as it evaporates during printing. The mixture is blended into an ink that is dispensed by the printer, layer by layer, into exact shapes matching the bone that needs to be replaced. The idea is, a patient would come in with a nasty broken bone -- say, a shattered jaw -- and instead of going through painful autograft surgeries or waiting for a custom scaffold to be manufactured, he or she could be x-rayed and a 3D-printed hyperelastic bone scaffold could be printed that same day.

If light took 13.1 billion years to reach us, that means such a galaxy was at that position 13.1 billion years ago — 700 million years after the big bang. Here's the kicker: What would we see if we were able to take the same photo of the same galaxy 700 million years ago? Would we see the big bang? The Earth was here at that time, so what's at play here?

It stands to reason the "Me too" effect cannot suffer association to one of the most known OS platforms in history. To call the next Windows OS "Windows 9", would draw a direct comparison to Apple’s old platform. They simply wouldn't have it. Now, if Apple were threatened by this, they might of called Yosemite "OS XI", a troubling word in the Chinese language pronounced "os see". But that didn't happen.

No mystery here. Just marketing.

Tim Cook: If You Don't Like Our Energy Policies, Don't Buy Apple Stock 348

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes "Nick Statt reports at Cnet that at Apple's annual shareholder meeting Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook shot down the suggestion from a conservative, Washington, DC-based think tank that Apple give up on environmental initiatives that don't contribute to the company's bottom line. The National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), hasn't taken kindly to Apple's increasing reliance on green energy and said so in a statement issued to Apple ahead of the meeting. 'We object to increased government control over company products and operations, and likewise mandatory environmental standards,' said NCPPR General Counsel Justin Danhof demanding that the pledge be voted on at the meeting. 'This is something [Apple] should be actively fighting, not preparing surrender.' Cook responded that there are many things Apple does because they are right and just, and that a return on investment (ROI) was not the primary consideration on such issues. 'When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind. I don't consider the bloody ROI,' said Cook. 'We do a lot of things for reasons besides profit motive, We want to leave the world better than we found it.' Danhof's proposal was voted down and to any who found the company's environmental dedication either ideologically or economically distasteful, Cook advised 'if you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock.'"

Quebec Language Police Target Store Owner's Facebook Page 506

New submitter wassomeyob writes "In Canada, the province of Quebec has their Official Language Act of 1974 (aka Bill 22) which makes French their sole official language. It has famously been used to force business owners to modify signage to give French pre-eminance over other languages. Now, the Quebec language police seem to be extending their reach to Facebook. Eva Cooper owns Delilah in the Parc — a shop in Chelsea, Quebec near the Quebec/Ontario border. She received a letter from the language office telling her to translate everything posted on her store's Facebook page into French."

The Higgs Boson Re-Explained By the Mick Jagger of Physics 94

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes "Jorge Cham, author of the comic strip Ph.D. comics, recently found himself on a bus crossing the Israel-Jordan border sitting next to Eilam Gross, head of the Atlas Higgs Group, one of the two groups that found the famous particle. When Cham asked Gross for feedback on the Higgs Boson animation he had done last year, Gross told Cham 'It's all wrong' and noted that he had yet to see a truly correct explanation of what the the Higgs Boson is. For the next three hours Gross, also known as the 'Mick Jagger of physics,' told Cham the story of the Higgs Boson and asked him to put it into a new comic strip. The result is a new comic re-explaining the Higgs Boson. 'So how does this explain things like inertia?' 'That's another bus ride.' As an interesting side note Gross was once asked what Higgs was good for and replied that when [J.J.] Thomson discovered the electron, in 1895, he raised a glass of champagne and proposed a toast 'to the useless electron.'"

Feed Solar Power Splits Water Into Hydrogen And Oxygen Using Unique Method (sciencedaily.com)

Engineers have developed a unique photocatlytic cell that splits water to produce hydrogen and oxygen in water using sunlight and the power of a nanostructured catalyst. The discovery provides a new, low-cost and efficient option for hydrogen production and can be used for a variety of distributed energy applications.
