Until yesterday, I would've agreed with you. Today, I regard CBC with the same disdain as any other sensationalist news network.
Yesterday, I read this http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/03/19/us_rxn_cda030 319 article, and was somewhat outraged by the term "unreliable ally." In one of those "hit send before rereading" moments, I sent a scornful e-mail to Mr. Biette, one of the article's contributors.
An hour later, Mr. Biette wrote back. Here are some exerpts (I hope he doesn't mind):
- The comments that made the radio story were taken out of the context of the conversation I had with the reporter.
- I made a point with the interviewer that the Canada-US relationship is a lopsided one, but one that Canada can't ignore. The relationship works much better when it is dealt with head on rather than on an ad hoc basis as we've seen with the current prime minister. This has worked for him politically and he sees no reason for it to change. This is where the journalist got "haphazard foreign policy" I think ? it is not a term I used, nor did I use the term "unreliable ally."
CBC's reporter took his honest opinion, twisted his words, and sensationalized the semi-truth. Nolton Nash is spinning in his retirement home.
