Submission + - "Coal King" Suing Time Warner, HBO, and John Oliver (washingtonpost.com)

Daetrin writes: Robert E. Murray, CEO of one of the largest coal mining companies in the US, is suing John Oliver, HBO, and Time Warner for defamation over a comedic report on the status of the coal industry in John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight". The report began with the decline of the coal mining industry, Trump's promises to revive it, and the plight of the workers involved, but was also highly critical of the business practices and safety record of Murray Energy Corporation and Robert Murray's leadership of the company. When the company was contacted about the piece before airing they responded with a cease and desist letter and threatened to sue. John Oliver continued with the segment anyways, saying "I didn’t really plan for so much of this piece to be about you, but you kinda forced my hand on that one."

And any other company could stop providing whatever it is you want at any time without warning as well. I'm not sure how switching from one company that could potentially screw you over (but isn't doing so right now and promises they won't in the future) to another company that could potentially screw you over (but isn't doing so right now and promises they won't in the future) is going to accomplish anything.

Really? You're upset that they're releasing an _optional_ tool? If they were dropping the ability to download DRM-free installers for the games and forcing you to use the the launcher instead then i would be upset too. But that's not what's happening at all, so i'm confused as to why you're in such a bother.

Submission + - GOG Announces Open Beta For New Game Platform (gog.com)

Donaithnen writes: Like many geeks I'm against the idea of DRM in general and have championed GOG.com's DRM-free approach to selling games online. Yet like many geeks I've also often succumbed to the temptation of Steam because of the convenience of tracking, installing, and playing my PC game purchases through the launcher, the compulsion of collecting achievements, and the OCD-ness of (and occasional dismay from) tracking the total playtime for my favorite games. Now GOG has announced the open beta for GOG Galaxy, an entirely optional launcher to allow those who want (and only those who want) to have all the same features when playing GOG games.

Yeah, the first problem is that this is just baseless speculation.

The _second_ problem is that I made the same baseless speculation two days ago and no one cared then, so it's amusing that someone else got front page news for saying the same thing. I guess the problem is that I had my tongue in my cheek while these guys are (at least pretending to be) serious about it?

The newly announced hardware is not going to be a new console. It is going to be a new portable. But not just any old regular portable!

After seeing all the buzz about Oculus VR, Project Morpheus, and SteamVR, Nintendo has decided they want some of that sweet, sweet VR action for themselves.

That's right, NX is actually a codename for... the Virtual Boy 2!
