On the corporate side, Win7 has much better capability for updating drivers and patching images offline. With 7 I no longer need to manage a million different images for specific configurations, and I don't have to jump through hoops just to get the right drivers injected for a specific model machine.

Despite the prevailing geek attitude here on Slashdot, Win7 offers better security out of the box, and much improved UAC settings. This will allow us to give users more control over their machines while still allowing for increased security.

Win7 is much more centrally manageable, there are lots more tweakable settings that we can implement via GPO. Group Policy Preferences and item-level targeting are both very cool.

I'd come up with more but I'm in the midst of finalizing our Win7 image for deployment. :)

Windows 7 Starter Edition — 3 Apps Only 695

CrustyFace writes "Cybernit reports that the Starter Edition version of Windows 7 will only allow the user to run 3 applications at once. Targeted at notebooks, this doesn't seem like such a bad limitation, however it is a bold move from Microsoft, and it will be interesting to see how the operating system sells."

Submission + - Scientists Break Speed of Light

PreacherTom writes: Scientists at the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, NJ are reporting that they have broken the speed of light. For the experiment, the researchers manipulated a vapor of laser-irradiated atoms, causing a pulse that shoots about 300 times faster than it would take the pulse to go the same distance in a vacuum, to the point where the pulse seemed to exit the chamber before even entering it. Apparently, Uncle Albert is still resting comfortably: relativity only states that an object with mass cannot travel faster than light. Still, the results are sufficient to merit publication in the prestigious journal, Nature.
