[...][T]his is a natural response to the rise of the DVR.
Quite so. Neilsen has been issuing ratings numbers on how many people actually watch commercials, and advertisers are using those numbers to determine how much they are willing to pay. If the networks want ad money at the same rate, they need to deliver the attention of the audience to the advertisers' products, and, as other posters have noted, we go back to something akin to television at its inception.

Feed RIAA Tries To Stop Trent Reznor's Promotional Campaign For New Concept Album (techdirt.com)

In the comments to an earlier post today, a reader pointed us to an article about Trent Reznor's promotional campaign for his latest Nine Inch Nails album. It sounds like he's taken a page from the various alternate reality games that have been popular in promoting movies and video games over the past few years. That is, there appears to be a series of secretive websites that are being leaked out with various clues and there's a big group of fans all trying to track down the details. Also, at some Nine Inch Nails concerts, people have found USB keys in the bathroom with songs from the upcoming album. Not surprisingly, those songs quickly found their way online, all with Reznor's approval. Of course, no one seems to have told the RIAA about this marketing campaign. The RIAA went and demanded that various sites pull down the songs, even though Reznor wanted the songs to spread for promotional purposes. The RIAA always says that if artists want to promote their own songs by giving them away for free they have no problem with it -- but it seems that their mindset is so focused on the idea that no one would ever want to do this that they still have to issue takedowns when artists want the songs given away.

Journal Journal: Herd behavior

Well, I finally gave in to peer pressure and made myself a MySpace profile.

Why would I do such a thing when I have a perfectly good Slashdot journal to write all the banal things that occur in my life and/or head? I suppose the answer is that most of my friends don't read Slashdot and my journal wouldn't get them to, but they do have MySpace pages.

So, hurrah, I have become a latecomer to an internet fad.

Journal Journal: I'm a man 15

It's time to tell the truth. I am a 55 year-old man. My name is Andy Kaufman, and I live in New York City.

I am sincerely sorry to everyone for all my lies.

So here it is, my first day of work. Being sent off like a child on the first day of school, with the tears of a sad woman trailing off behind me. She isn't really crying, she's handling it ok. Well, she's sleeping, and quite deeply.

So, in our new apartment our cellphones work better as a marital aid than a communication device (not that I'm aware of any of that sort of usage, just saying it's more functional in any capacity other than it's intended design.)

Journal Journal: New Year Moves 2

In a nutshell, got moved in, just got the computers setup, and had a great New Years. The UHaul trip up was a pain in the ass, after we are supposed to get started at 8am and the UHaul is adamant about not starting, which is contrary to the point of getting a truck to move your belongings from point A to point B.

Journal Journal: Merry Christmas -- $$$$$exyGal

It's not the new year yet, but it seems like a good time to give thanks.

Long story short, I've had a good year. Great job, short commute, and dating again. I've become focused, but with great flexibility. I'm not sweating the big stuff, or the small stuff. The good stuff is in the middle.

May your holidays be commercial-free,
