Comment These Devices Do More Than Breath Tests (Score 2) 115

Most states require a camera and GPS to be installed along with the interlock device these days. At the calibration this data is pulled off the device and uploaded to the companies servers along with calibrating the actual device. The devices really are shitty enough that the monthly calibration is necessary. I've worked in shops that serviced them where devices would need to be replaced almost every calibration during the cold months.

I have no sympathy for people who have to suffer with these devices, they are lucky they are still being allow driving privileges at all. Intoxalock is honestly one of the best manufacturers of the devices though, and they make life miserable for everyone including the shops that service them. I have no idea why the owners signed a contract with them, they little bit of money we made on install and removal was easily eaten up by the constant calibration headaches.

Dirty secret of these devices is they can easily be bypassed by jumping a pin on the starter relay. The GPS will detect the anomaly and go in to a service lock out, but you'll be able to start the car with the jumper. I wouldn't do this if I was on probation, but if some bullshit like this bricked my car and I had to get to work I'd do it.

Kiwifarms also has a culture of non-interaction with their subjects. New accounts come on an brag they tweeted at someone and you get 20 comments saying, "don't tip the cows", "stop pozloading my neghole", "don't touch the poop". These actors have as much to do with Kiwifarms as Facebook had to do with Christchurch. And it can be argued Kiwifarms does a better job dealing with the bad actors and responding to complaints.

Your comment honestly sounds more angry and hateful than most of the comments you would read on Kiwifarms. Perhaps if people don't want to be talked about they should not make public spectacles of themselves. Clara ran a discord server called Catboy Ranch dedicated to grooming and "pinkpilling" minors. They bragged about getting minors on estrogen in their tweets, many if which are archived. There's archives of her Kiwifarms page, I suggest people search for them and take a look. Learn who @keffals and @bobposting are. Maybe these tweets were simply bait, in that case don't be surprised when you catch a fish. These internet activists types are their own worst enemy, I swear. Just the same way the online wing of Trumpism coalesced out of Gamergate, the extremist right is gaining power and passing real legislation against trans people and real life transphobia is spreading like a wild fire, here trans twitter comes to tear down the containment sites so they can come back and recruit on mainstream platforms like our goddamn school board meetings. Maybe if these terminally online trans women had any thoughts for the trans people just trying to make it in the world I'd have a little more sympathy but since the online world is all they know we don't even exist.

He talks about his professional engineer ring in one video and he's cracked a few jokes about being a dork with a doctorate. I'd guess depending on the things he talks about, the areas he seems extremely knowledgable in, and the traveling he does for work that he's an engineer in the mining industry who truly enjoys getting his hands dirty. So probably quite a bit more educated than a "repair guy", yet way the hell cooler than most people who's title starts with doctor and primary tool is a clipboard.

The Juicero was ridiculously over engineered. Extremely complicated molds, very intricate machining on the metal parts, just a ridiculously overspec'd machine in every sense. There are very few commodity parts in the machine, the labor costs surely were through the roof. As some one who spent some time in the tool and die field, I can say the parts themselves are just mind blowing. It is an absolutely beautiful machine inside, even if it is completely useless. I guarantee they were taking a massive loss on the machine. Check out this teardown:

They let their engineers just go nuts and blew through that VC money like a fat line of coke.

Start up time is just about the worst metric the previous poster could have used to illustrate their point. Once the VM is up an running, in many cases Java is almost as fast as C [1]. I don't know how much storage a Java installation uses or how much memory the VM hogs, but people are bundling browsers and Javascript frameworks together in to 100+ MB text editors these days. I imagine Java is relatively svelte compared to a few of those types of apps installed on a modern computer. It is definitely slower and more bloated than a C program, but I think in proportion to the resources we have today it's close enough for most purposes.
