Part of the issue is that programming isn't a one size fits all cookie cutter problem. Once you get past the very basic basics, the amount of necessary comprehension needed to progress skyrockets geometrically. Combine this with the derth of intermediate level training and it leaves many trying to program bleeding edge software with "hello world" skill kevels. (Full disclosure: I'm not a 'pro', just a self taught ol' skool hack)
