Submission + - Cyber War is Upon Us–But Only One Side is Attacking (cio.com)

Curseyoukhan writes: "The first shot was probably the release of Stuxnet sometime during or before 2009. Even though no one has officially claimed responsibility everyone knows who was behind it. Stuxnet hit with a bang and did a whole lot of damage to Iran’s uranium-enrichment capabilities. We followed up Stuxnet with Flame–the ebola virus of spyware.

What did the Iranians fire back with? A series of massive, on-going and ineffective DDoS attacks on American banks. This is a disproportionate response but not in the way military experts usually mean that phrase. It’s the equivalent of someone stealing your car and you throwing an ever-increasing number of eggs at his house in response.

It’s fascinating that Iran continues to do nothing more despite the fact that U.S. critical infrastructure currently has the defensive posture of a dog waiting for a belly rub. Keep that in mind the next time you hear that a "cyber Pearl Harbor" is imminent."

Submission + - 'Murder By Internet-Connected Devices' is Dumbest Prediction of 2012, '13 &' (cio.com)

Curseyoukhan writes: "Infosec vendor IID (Internet Identity) probably hopes that by the time 2014 rolls around no one will remember the prediction it just made. That is the year it says we will see the first murder via internet connected device. The ability to do this has been around for quite some time but the company won't say why it hasn't happened yet. Probably because that would have screwed up their fear marketing. CIO blogger challenges them to a $10K bet over their claim."

Submission + - New Zealand turning Hobbits into cash, literally (cbsnews.com)

Curseyoukhan writes: "With its economy struggling, New Zealand hopes to cash in on "The Hobbit" by turning it into actual cash. The nation is releasing special commemorative coins depicting characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book. The coin release coincides with the premiere of the first installment in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of the book. It is also part of a publicity campaign aimed to rebrand the country "100 percent Middle Earth.""

Submission + - Norton '12 Cybercrime Report Magically Makes $278B in Losses Disappear (cio.com)

Curseyoukhan writes: "Norton released its annual cybercrime report on Wednesday, and the company put the “direct costs associated with global consumer cybercrime at US $110 billion over the past twelve months.” Last year’s report put the total “at an annual price of $388 billion globally based on financial losses and time lost." That's more than the estimated value of the global black market in marijuana, cocaine and heroin combined ($288 billion), the report said.
But Norton makes no mention of the vast difference in 2011 and 2012 numbers. That's because last year’s number was entirely fictitious."

Submission + - Why you shouldn't be so worried about cyber war. (cio.com)

Curseyoukhan writes: "The phrase "cyber war" is being used to scare us into coughing up money and liberties, just like "anarchist" once was, and "terror" still is. To quote H.L. Mencken, "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.""
