Comment I'm not even clicking the "Apply" button (Score 2) 182

I'm getting by on rideshare until I figure out what other work to get into. The tech sector is a clusterfudge I'm walking away from. Every job opening I'm well qualified for ends up receiving hundreds of applications from other candidates, so that's a lot of competition just to start off. And the gatekeepers of the tech sector are too stupid and powerful in this day and age. The combination of AI based resume filtering, age-ism, no forgiveness for even a 3 month unemployment gap, claiming I'm too experienced and therefore too expensive, and other horseshit excuses and tools they use to filter out candidates like myself just make it impossible for me get back into doing coding work anymore. Searching for openings and even bothering to apply just amounts to months of frustrating wasted time and effort that can add up to years. I have my health and sanity to think about. I'm not about to just sit there watching my life go by behind a screen endlessly applying and filling out application forms without even getting a reply only to finally get ONE INTERVIEW maybe 11 months later only for them to pick some other applicant. Would rather just accept low income work doing something simpler and easier and exercise more, stay physically fit, and eat healthy. I can do today's work with newer tech and AI and copilot and vibe-code and use Anthropic and ChatGPT and all that other AI stuff everyone is playing with these days. My handle is still "ClassicASP" but I've moved on to newer more up to date stuff and stayed current. I'm not even using Windows anymore; I've moved into the Linux world. But for me now coding and development is more of a utility for chasing other personal interests with much more powerful and awesome tech involved; for me its no longer a source of income that is reasonably attainable and stable and pays well enough for all the extra wasted time and effort chasing the job opening to be worth the pursuit.

Yes, if it doesn't both drive on the road and also take-off & fly in the same fashion as the DeLorean did in the "Back to the Future" movies, its definitely not a flying car. That standard was quite well set back in the 80's and disappointingly we're still just not there yet. Bummer. This article was a huge let-down.

That's all I've ever really wanted. Reasonable speed with a static IP for $50 per month. Nobody offers it. Everybody wants a hundred bucks and keeps guaranteeing more and more bandwidth as though I gave a rats arse when all I need is for the IP address to remain constant. Greedy bastards.

Keep it Simple Stupid: Common sense would suggest that the cable probably would not hang exactly as pictured in the diagram. It would more likely hang in the shape of a perfect semi-circle. That being said, if the height of the poles is 50m and the distance from the cable to the ground is 20m, that means the difference would be the radius of that semi-circle, which is 30m. Double that and you get the distance between the poles: 60m. Very simple.

Comment Makes sense. Its just the Army. (Score 4, Insightful) 506

I'd me more surprised if it were the marines or the navy seals being downsized. The Army is a lot of bulk manpower that just sits around for the most part and maintains control of areas that have already been seized from the enemy via the attacking efforts of the marines. Advancements of technology means drones and stationary automated turrets can do a lot of that defending work I'd imagine. Just gotta have some protected folks around to maintain control and change the batteries every now and then. Probably way more affordable than actual people. The marines and seals on the other hand can't be so easily replaced by a machine.

Not as long as China protects him he won't. For various reasons I don't entirely understand China has elected to keep this family in power.

I thought it was rather obvious. Kim Jong-un and his kin are likely a family line of alcoholics more than happy to just stay drunk and remain too busy having fun partying it up to dare think clearly for a moment and "rock the boat" (just ask Dennis Rodman). Kim is Probably a pushover who is easily persuaded to keep drinking by his admirees. And as long as he's too busy keeping staying drunk, he's not dabbling in more dangerous things things like warfare and nukes. Last thing we want is a family line of stone-cold-sober and power-obsessed critical thinkers at the helm. That could lead to genocide. So I guess we can all give a big thanks to Rodman for sacrificing his time and health to do his part to protect world peace by keeping this overempowered wild-child distracted. Things could be a lot worse.

Well if it had very little alcohol, maybe they drank a whole lot of it, plus drank it while consuming other drugs and substances. The reigning pharaoh at the time (Pharaoh Amenhotep III) had a reign that was relatively peaceful and uneventful. The beer explains it. When alcohol consumption by the population in general in any country goes down, the probability of a looming war goes up. When everyone calms down and has a drink, war probability goes down. Right now in Egypt alcohol sale restrictions have increased and stores have even been pressured to close shop by society in general, and we all have heard of the recent chaos as of late there. Its even happened to the United States. World War One started soon after prohibition.
