A british gaming industry mag. More about the background, technicalities etc. of gaming.
I still remember they carried a monthly section (in the '90s) where readers could showcase their own 3D modelling skills. Also it had the largest section of gaming vacancies in the UK back then. Joints like RARE and EIDOS posted jobs there.. That should tell you enough about their readership :)

bbianca127 writes "Researchers studied classical conditioning in 55 study participants while sleeping or awake. According to the article, 'Classical conditioning teaches a person or animal to associate one stimulus with another.' The researchers paired tones with scents; when they played a tone, they would let out a particular scent while the participants were sleeping. They found that the participants would make the association between the tones and scents even while awake."

The creator has instructions on his site on how to make (out of Lego bricks) a machine that 'prints' Lego models — much like a 3D fabrication machine — after you model them in MLCad. The sped up video is nothing short of impressive."

Maybe not applicable to games/mp3/etc. just yet. But consider this:
A vendor-neutral system to manage bought and paid for digital licenses. It doesn't matter if iTunes goes belly up, because your license lives on in the keychest.
I know, I know. It's disney and all. Evil corporations shouldn't mess with this. BUT! It is a good idea, and a step in the right direction. Now if only we could get Keychest out of the hands of captain jack sparrow, erhm, I mean Disney, it would be perfect.

rduke15 writes "I'm trying to find a centrally managed anti-virus solution for a small business network, which has around 20 Windows XP machines with a Linux server. It is too big to manage each client manually. However, there is no no full-time IT person on site, and no Windows Active Directory server — just Linux with Samba. And the current solution with Symantec Endpoint Protection seems too expensive, and too complex for such a simple need. On the Linux server side, email is handled by amavisd and ClamAV. But the WinXP clients still need a real-time anti-virus for the USB disks they may bring to work, or stuff they download from their personal webmail or other sites. I'm wondering what others may be using in similar situations, and how satisfied they are with it."

What Programming Language For Linux Development? 997

I'm an IT university student but my degree program focuses almost exclusively on Microsoft tools (Visual Studio, C#, ASP.NET, etc.) which is why I would like to expand my repertoire on my own. Personally I'm quite comfortable in a Linux environment, but have never programmed for it. Over the years I've developed a healthy fear of everything Java and I'm not too sure of what I think of Python's use of indentation to delimit blocks. The question that remains is: what language and tools should I be using?"

The Player Is and Is Not the Character 152

Jill Duffy writes "GameCareerGuide has posted an intellectual article about video games which argues there is no such thing as 'breaking the fourth wall' in games. Written by Matthew Weise, a lead game designer for the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab, the article considers the complex relationship between video game players and characters. Weise says that, unlike in theater and film, video games don't ever really break the fourth wall, as it were, because in games, there is no wall. Players are always tethered to the technology, and the player is always just as much the main character as not the main character. Weise looks at both modern experimental games, like Mirror's Edge, as well as old classics, like Sonic the Hedgehog, to defend his point. He writes, 'Both avatars and the technological devices we use to control them are never simply in one reality. They are inherently liminal entities, contributing to a mindset that we, as players, exist in two realities at once. It's just as natural for a player to say, "I defeated that boss," as it is to say, "Snake defeated that boss," since Snake is and is not the player at the same time. It is likewise natural for a player to say, "I punched an enemy soldier," when in reality, she punched no one. All she did was press a button.'"

IANAL but most Law and Order eps actually make the point that all evidence gathered on the basis of unlawfully obtained evidence (so even a search warrant based on those things) can be thrown out in a court case.

Besides, if you are dumb enough to write these kinds of stories in a plain file on your PC you're probably dumb enough to use the same password on all machines (and maybe even install the same trojan twice).. damn hackers are responsible for everything these days! ;)
