Comment Returns have been a mess for several years (Score 2) 9

It used to be easy to return items and if something went wrong I called them and it was corrected immediately. That changed in the past several years and in different ways. Recently I returned something at Whole Foods, got the email confirmation and an immediate refund. Weeks later I got emails telling me the deadline to return the item was coming up. When the deadline passed they charged me for the item again. Calling them is pointless, almost impossible to talk to a person and when I have gotten through, they either don't understand what I'm telling them or they pretend not to understand. My only option is to dispute the charge with my credit card which requires some creative answers since the questions asked don't address my issue. Then Amazon sends me an email asking me to explain my dispute. When I explain it to them they respond as if I'm bugging them. Now I take pictures of the return with the return label on it at Whole Foods and when I explained my problem to the person taking my return she said the return labels have been falling off the packages so now everything has to go in a separate bag. So they acknowledge they get the item, refund the money and when they lose track of it they expect me to pay. My purchases have gone way down because of this and they may not zero if this continues.

I didn't drop his name, I explained where you could find information on the revocation process and why it doesn't work. Calling him a dickhead doesn't mean he is wrong but it does tell me a lot about you. Care to explain your opinion of him? Hard to imagine how you came to that conclusion? Did SpinRite wipe out your hard disk and you blame him because you didn't have a backup?

There are complex reasons revocation doesn't work and simply saying fix doesn't actually fix it. Search the Security Now podcasts if you care to learn why, Steve Gibson has discussed this for years including recently. By the way, he is against shortening the duration. You seem to miss the point of the comment you were replying to since 7 x $0 = $0. Plus it's not clear that the annual cost will change for non free certs. The work required will change if you do it manually which encourages automation.

Every week or two I have to remove some crap they add to my home screen. I don't see an option to stop this from happening so I just hide it every time something new shows up. I assume they can see that I keep doing this but pissing me off seems to be part of their business plan. Adding ads I can't skip will solve this problem since I will stop using my Rokus immediately.

Nvidia Unveils New Mid-Range GeForce Graphics Card 158

crookedvulture writes "Nvidia has uncorked another mid-range graphics card, the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Every tech site on the web seems to have coverage of this new $250 offering, and The Tech Report's review will tell you all you need to know about the various flavors available, including how their performance compares to cards from 2-3 years ago. Interestingly, the review concludes that pretty much any modern mid-range graphics card offers smooth frame rates while playing the latest games at the common desktop resolution of 1920x1080. You may want to pay closer attention to power consumption and noise levels when selecting a new card."

FreeNAS Switching From FreeBSD To Debian Linux 206

dnaumov writes "FreeNAS, a popular, free NAS solution, is moving away from using FreeBSD as its underlying core OS and switching to Debian Linux. Version 0.8 of FreeNAS as well as all further releases are going to be based on Linux, while the FreeBSD-based 0.7 branch of FreeNAS is going into maintenance-only mode, according to main developer Volker Theile. A discussion about the switch, including comments from the developers, can be found on the FreeNAS SourceForge discussion forum. Some users applaud the change, which promises improved hardware compatibility, while others voice concerns regarding the future of their existing setups and lack of ZFS support in Linux."

Herschel Spectroscopy of Future Supernova 21

davecl writes "ESA's Herschel Space Telescope has released its first spectroscopic results. These include observations of VYCMa, a star 50 times as massive as the sun and soon to become a supernova, as well as a nearby galaxy, more distant colliding starburst galaxies and a comet in our own solar system. The spectra show more lines than have ever been seen in these objects in the far-infrared and will allow astronomers to work out the detailed chemistry and physics behind star and planet formation as well as the last stages of stellar evolution before VYCMa's eventual collapse into a supernova. More coverage is available at the Herschel Mission Blog, which I run."

The State of Ruby VMs — Ruby Renaissance 89

igrigorik writes "In the short span of just a couple of years, the Ruby VM space has evolved to more than just a handful of choices: MRI, JRuby, IronRuby, MacRuby, Rubinius, MagLev, REE and BlueRuby. Four of these VMs will hit 1.0 status in the upcoming year and will open up entirely new possibilities for the language — Mac apps via MacRuby, Ruby in the browser via Silverlight, object persistence via Smalltalk VM, and so forth. This article takes a detailed look at the past year, the progress of each project, and where the community is heading. It's an exciting time to be a Rubyist."

EA Shuts Down Pandemic Studios, Cuts 200 Jobs 161

lbalbalba writes "Electronic Arts is shutting down its Westwood-based game developer Pandemic Studios just two years after acquiring it, putting nearly 200 people out of work. 'The struggling video game publisher informed employees Tuesday morning that it was closing the studio as part of a recently announced plan to eliminate 1,500 jobs, or 16% of its global workforce. Pandemic has about 220 employees, but an EA spokesman said that a core team, estimated by two people close to the studio to be about 25, will be integrated into the publisher's other Los Angeles studio, in Playa Vista.' An ex-developer for Pandemic attributed the studio's struggles to poor decisions from the management."

Small, High-Resolution LCD Monitors? 370

An anonymous reader writes "I'm a veteran user of an old 17" Dell Trinitron CRT monitor. I run it at 1400x1050 with an 80Hz refresh rate — about as high as it goes before it'll go out of the monitor's scan range. More recently I've been looking to finally upgrade to an LCD monitor but found that, for the most part, every 17" monitor on the market runs natively at 1280x1024, as does every 19" monitor — I have to go for a 20" to go higher. Now yes, I know I'm complaining about just 120 pixels horizontal and 26 pixels vertical, but my laptop's 15" display runs natively at 1400x1050. Is there any standalone monitor on the market that'll natively do higher than 1280x1024 without killing my desk space?"
