Submission + - Japanese Cops Collar Malware-Carrying Cat (net-security.org)

Orome1 writes: "When imagining law enforcement officers investigating and searching for cyber criminals or evidence about their activities, the last thing that you can probably envision is them searching for a stray cat. But that was exactly what detectives of Japan's National Police Agency recently did as the last step in a complex "treasure hunt" started on New Year’s Day by a person (persons?) who is allegedly the mastermind behind the so-called “Remote Control Virus”. The malware in question was instrumental in staging a continuous campaign of death and bomb threats sent to airline companies, kindergartens, schools, law offices, broadcasting networks and shrines."

Comment Re:Car built for 15 years... (Score 1) 655

Don't confuse the car parked in your driveway with a vehicle used for work. Some company's fleet vehicles are ready for retirement after 2-3 years if the mileage is high enough. That's not always simply because "it was in the lease agreement". The truck I drove at one job had a spectacular transmission failure at 2 years. But it was passed the 250k km mark in their "fix it or auction it" program. It still looked good on the outside. So I think if his father was looking for a >80,000 km/yr car (ie a work vehicle) to last more than 15 years guaranteed, it is an apt analogy.

Spielberg Working on Wii Exclusive 36

GameDaily is reporting on comments made to them by EA Los Angeles General Manager Neil Young, stating that Steven Spielberg is working on a Wii title. Spielberg's relationship to the games giant is well known; we discussed it last year during E3. The site promises a more thorough interview next week, but for now just offers the promise of a Wii title with Spielberg's storytelling magic. "The first one, what I can tell you is what you'd expect, sort of, from a Steven Spielberg production. Steven's stories are intimate stories that take place around huge, world-changing events... sort of, big stories shown through the eyes of a small group. Doug Church is producing it... The second project is something Lou Castle is producing, one of the great producers in this industry, and that's one of the products we're building for the Wii. Very exciting and interesting..."

Submission + - Prototype telescope completes key test

Matthew Sparkes writes: "Two prototype antennas for the world's largest array of millimetre-wave telescopes have passed a key test, working to track and image Saturn for more than an hour. Ultimately, ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is expected to resolve details 10 times finer than the Hubble Space Telescope when it is completed in 2012."

Submission + - PC Gaming's Future Evolution

Dr. Eggman writes: 1up.com is reporting on the GDC panel "PC Gaming in an Age of Connected Consoles", and their views on the PC. Unlike the usual doom and gloom about the "death" of PC games, this panel's has suggested that the death is of PC games as we know it; in that PC games will evolve. They believe PC gaming's future lies in it's strenghs like persistent-world environments, not just as MMOs but anything that has elements of a persistent nature such as Battlefield 2142. They go on to describe the PC's greatest edge over consoles: user created content and the supportive game communities built around it. The article also cited the panel's views on the weaknesses inherent in consoles' closed networks and content control.

GDC: LucasArts and The Force Unleashed 54

With the title of 'Next Generation GamePlay in Service of Story and Characters', LucasArts had a lot of ground to cover Thursday morning. Their new technologies have been well received, and the developers and journalists in the room were anticipating details on the over-the-top effects we've seen from The Force Unleashed. From a technical standpoint, Haden Blackman's talk fully delivered. Read on for my notes from this fascinating look at the point where storytelling and physics meet.
