I feel like one of the things that changed with social sites is many of us have found our crowd and we "socialise" online. What used to happen was we socialised in person with people near us but they weren't necessarily the right group they were the available people. Plenty of what people do on social networks isn't social but I think research needs to understand better what is happening here as its a change in how people socialise, if anything people are putting more time into it as we can see with how many hours they spend on social media.

Its severely weakened already and there is a cold spot that has been growing that scientists fear might be the death of it. We might not even be decades away from AMOC collapse, its very possible its years.

Its a pretty dystopian framing that its enabled him to work instead of being able to speak to his family and friends and do more with their time. Work isn't the purpose of life but its a marker of the times that this is how this is framed.

I have seen the same thing with every tool that scans code for security problems. Inevitably it raises a potential issue but in practice it can't be exploited because there are barriers at the edges where user input comes into the system that stop the exploit, which is the entire point of parsing all user input and limiting what it can do. These reports aren't coming with an active exploit of the system, they are theoretical problem and are leaving all the work to the project to figure out if its real or not. Its potential CVE slop.

First they came for the new accounts but I did not speak up because mine is an old account. Then they came from the edgy accounts but mine was not an edgy account. Then they came for the frequent posters but again I did not speak out because I posted just the right amount. Now they have asked me to prove I am human and provide government issued ID and there is not one left to speak for me.

Linux already won on the server and Unix with Mac OS X is already taking chunks out of the Windows world in laptops its not a stretch to see that now gaming is approaching parity that gamers will be switching to Linux. I don't know if we are going to end up with Linux as the primary desktop operating system for gamers and then most users but if we do its going to harm more than just Microsoft, a lot of proprietry software is going to fall. Its all a bit too late when the market is already shifting.

The USA is no longer a safe country, for Europeans it is viewed much like a trip to Iran or North Korea or Russia would be. Its a place where we could be illegal detained and held without having done anything wrong. Its just not worth it.

$122 is getting kind of high when a home Solar system is delivering the same MWh for $50. Solar takes up more space but it's also a lot cheaper per MWh now.

Indeed NAT and the need for port forwarding is a big part of the problem that has made the cloud so much easier to use. The default for any firewall is still going to be to block even on IPv6 but a lot of people would just deploy PnP anyway and then things would just work. What we really need for the IoT that moves about, like phones, is our own address ranges that can be dynamically routed so that we can move and traffic still finds us but our IP is always the same, whether joining from the mobile network, the cafe wifi or home wifi. IPv7 is going to be required for that one.

Its not really any different for the IPv6 device, it gets its own IP out but any attempts to communicate it will by default be blocked by the firewall just the same. The big difference is you can have multiple devices behind the firewall all exposed on the same port and there is no translation. IPv6 isn't perfect but it is just a better solution than NAT. NAT has delayed the need for migration of IPv4 but with CGNAT being deployed increasingly and it being a bit of a problem for a lot of people IPv6 is going to become more and more necessary as time goes on and more devices join the internet.

The number of people behind all this is relatively small, if we could simply ban the influence of a few thousand people all this fake far right "news" would disappear. This is a coordinated attack on democracy and the weaknesses in social and traditional media has allowed a few elites to start to wrestle control for their own enrichment.

I don't think its all that likely it will cool off that much next year. Its far more likely to sustain its current trend much closer to 1.5C. The IPCC has consistently got this wrong, the warming effect of CO2 is about double what they all modelled in the 1970s because we were hiding a lot of the impact with pollution. I would put my money on >1.5C again.

Firefox's ability to change this is quite limited to the Ads and malware that is inserted into pages. It can't solve the problem of these companies constantly tracking everything a logged in account does and selling it to anyone. It certainly doesn't stop the companies leaving access to their databases open so anyone can download the lot and sell it to the highest bidder. A lot of people know this, chrome is a small part of the problem but there is so much more to this.

There are so many ships passing over them every day they are very difficult to defend. On top of that there are a lot of Russian ships to be escorting. I do think we should likely increase surveillance of the cables so its easier to identify which vessel sabotaged them making it less of an investigation and more of a raid the ship and arrest the crew situation if we can. We can't stop the state involved from sanction these attacks but we can put the people doing them behind bars and seize the ships to dissuade it.

The failure of successive COPs to agree to get rid of fossil fuels means that this is going to become necessary. It is going to happen whether we like it or not as their are countries that will benefit from doing it. There is no requirement for the rest of the world to agree to it. It is going to happen, the experiments are clearly already happening.
