Submission + - Uber and Lyft Must Immediately Ban "Peeping Tom" Drivers (vortex.com)

Lauren Weinstein writes: In response to a news story revealing that an Uber driver has been (usually surreptitiously) live streaming video and most audio of his passengers without their knowledge or consent — exposing them to ridicule and potentially much worse by his streaming audience, both Uber and Lyft have reportedly simply argued that the practice is legal in that particular (one-party recording permission) state.

That kind of response is of course absolutely unacceptable and below reproach, demonstrating the utter lack of ethics of these ride sharing firms. They argue that this doesn’t even violate any of their driver terms.

That needs to change — IMMEDIATELY!

Submission + - The one-use self-destructing DVD is back! (pcworld.com)

BonrHanzon writes: Looks like DivX (the stupid one, not the codec) has been resurrected in the form of Flexplay. Staples will be selling these movie disks for 5 bucks a pop at the checkout counter. These disks can be played in any dvd player and the special adhesive will render the disk unplayable 48 hours after the package has been opened. As if our landfills weren't already filled with crap.

Submission + - No New Spending on Outsourcing in 2007

DebNY writes: "CIO Insight has released a report that says that while IT budgets at midsize firms are up 8.6 percent this year, spending on outsourcing remains flat. Inestad, mid-market companies will build up their own capabilities, particularly in virtualization, business intelligence and disaster recovery. This seems to contradict an earlier report from eWeek that claims that CIOs will increase their spending with external service providers significantly in 2007."

I guess you weren't on the east coast of the US during the blackout last August. Most cell phones didn't work - probably due to overload. But POTS worked (at least in NJ), but not if you had only cordless phones. God help anyone who had an actual emergency during the blackout.
