Comrade, You Are So Not Getting a Dell 600

theodp writes "At the World Economic Forum, Michael Dell's pitch to help Russia with its computers got the cold-as-Siberia shoulder from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. 'We don't need help,' shot back Putin. 'We are not invalids. We don't have limited mental capacity' (video — rant starts at 1:24). 'Our programmers are some of the best in the world,' Putin continued. 'No one would contest that here — not even our Indian colleagues.'"

Unemployment Claims Crash State Web Sites 233

1sockchuck writes "A sign of the times: a surge in filings for unemployment benefits has crashed online application systems in four states this week. Web sites in Ohio, New York, Kentucky and North Carolina have been knocked offline by unusually high volumes of jobless claims. Phone applications systems appearing to be faring even worse in many states. The thin silver lining: states are hiring workers for phone banks and buying new servers to prop up their web sites."

Google Terminates Lively 186

FornaxChemica writes "In a surprise move, Google announced today, both on-site and in its blog, that it will permanently shut down its 3D virtual world, Lively, by the end of the year. This makes Lively one of Google's few scrapped products, and one of the most short-lived, too, barely lasting 6 months. No official reason was given, only that Google wants to 'prioritize [its] resources and focus more on [its] core search, ads and apps business.' Lively might have taken too much and given back too little, even by Google's standards."

The term "shoot 'em up" should not be applied to FPS games. That term (often abbreviated "shmup") applies to the arcade style, vertical or horizontal scrolling titles, in which the character is in a ship, moving on a two dimensional plane and seemingly not affected by gravity. Think Galaga, Gradius, Life Force, Ikaruga, etc.

Shmups which often have well over 100 bullets onscreen at one time are sometimes referred to as "manic" shmups (or alternatively, "curtain-fire" shmups).

I presume they incorrectly borrowed that term for this poll because they were trying to create titles to distinguish between the types of FPS titles.
