Submission + - Smithsonian Unveils "Art of Games" Voting Results (examiner.com)

AndrewGOO9 writes: The Smithsonian American Art Museum, in recognizing that electronic games are a part of our artistic history has today unveiled the 80 games out of a proposed pool of 240 that will be included in The Art of Video Games exhibit running from March 16, 2012 to September 30, 2012. While the winning games, as voted by gamers and art enthusiasts alike, are all stand-out titles, it goes without saying that this a huge step in the recognition of video games as artisitic masterpieces. Chris Melissinos, the curator of the exhibition, will also be giving a webcast today at 1PM (EST) to discuss the winning games.

Submission + - Valve beats Google, Apple for profits per employee (examiner.com)

AndrewGOO9 writes: It should come with little surprise that Gabe Newell is well on his way to being one of the wealthiest men in gaming. In an age when console gamers would have many believe that the PC was on it's way out the door, Newell and Valve's Steam stand as sentinels of the platform, offering a ridiculous amount of content to the 30 million users. With the lion's share of the downloadable market on the PC, it's no wonder that Steam has become the go-to for many and an incredible financial opportunity for Newell and Valve.

Because it's given everyone a voice to say just about whatever they want and people have chosen to use that voice to routinely demonstrate their ignorance, disregard any sort of concrete evidence and regularly illustrate a lack of respect to some degree of their fellow human beings. But hey, that's the internet. /Ta-da

Submission + - Split screen co-op is dying (goozernation.com)

kube00 writes: Split screen co-op and local multiplayer are becoming something from the past. Games like the Halo series and Rock Band 3 sort of fill that void. What happened to cramming a bunch of gamers into a room with two TVs and doing a system link match in Halo? Where have the all night Goldeneye matches gone? Like the arcades of gamers' youth, local multiplayer and co-op bonding experience has been replaced with individual gamers and a network

Left-Handed Gamers Getting Left Behind? 426

An anonymous reader writes "As the stylus becomes a contemporary equal with the controller and joystick, it is a bit surprising to notice a game developer overlooking the simple fact that there are a lot of southpaw gamers out there. But the creators of Base 10, a mini-game on the DSi, did just that, making it impossible for the game to be played by anyone who isn't right-handed. Seems pretty silly for a game developer to just cut out a slice of their potential audience right from the start."

Submission + - Halo Reach Code Leaked to Filesharing Sites (thinq.co.uk)

Stoobalou writes: What appears to be the entire code for Bungie's Halo Reach game has turned up on a number of file sharing sites.

The hotly-anticipated multi-player shooter had been hosted on a private area of the Microsoft Live site in order for journalists to preview the release, but Microsoft has admitted that a security breach has meant that pirates have been able to bypass personal download codes given to writers.

Disk images of the game are now appearing on a number of public torrent and P2P sites as well as on popular NZB aggregators and Usenet binaries newsgroups.

Submission + - The Brainy Gamer: Portal on the booklist (brainygamer.com)

jamie writes: "This year, for the first time, a video game will appear on the syllabus of a course required for all students at Wabash College, where I teach. For me — and for a traditional liberal arts college founded in 1832 — this is a big deal. Alongside Gilgamesh, Aristotle's Politics, John Donne's poetry, Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the Tao Te Ching, freshmen at Wabash will also encounter a video game called Portal. If you're curious to know how it happened, read on. Last spring Wabash faculty approved a new all-college course and charged a small committee to design it over the..."
